Lia Schorr Institute's Make-Up Program

Located in the Upper East Side section of midtown Manhattan, the Lia Schorr Institute (LSI) educates students in make-up, hair and skincare. LSI offers a certificate program in esthetics, skincare and salon management leading to esthetician licensure.

Esthetics, Skincare and Salon Management Certificate

This school is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences and licensed by the New York State Education Department. This 600-hour program conforms to the state requirements for esthetics licensure, and graduates are eligible to take the written examination required to get their licenses. Students enrolled in this program learn numerous make-up artistry, hair and skin care theories and techniques, such as waxing, facials, color-skin tone compatibility, product selection and creative cosmetic design. The program consists of one in-depth course, which provides students with applied and theoretical education in all of the above areas.

Course topics include airbrushing, bridal make-up, theatrical cosmetic application and medical camouflaging. Graduates are qualified to work as make-up artists or skin care specialists in spas, salons, medical offices and various other posts in the entertainment, advertising, photography and fashion industries.

Make-Up Designory's Make-Up Programs

The Make-Up Designory (MUD) is located in the heart of New York City in downtown Manhattan, near the SoHo district and the Hudson River. It offers four diploma programs in make-up artistry and several individual courses in beauty, airbrushing and special cosmetic effects.

Fashion Make-Up Artistry Diploma

This diploma program provides students with 392 hours of study on the application of make-up for the fashion industry. It consists of three in-depth courses in beauty and hairstyling. The beauty fundamentals course teaches students how to use techniques like eyeshadow contouring, foundation base matching, corrective concealer and airbrushing to create cosmetic looks that won't appear faded or washed out under the bright lights of model runways. Mastery of these skills may lead to cosmetology careers in various areas of the entertainment industry, such as fashion, film, print advertising or photography.

Film and Television Make-Up Artistry Diploma

This 630-hour program trains students to become theatrical or special effects make-up artists in the motion picture and television industries. The goal of its course curricula is to educate students in the foundations of make-up theory and application and to create dramatic effects through theatrical cosmetic application. In order to complete the program and earn a diploma, students must take courses in beauty fundamentals, make-up artistry for film characters and special effects prosthetic makeup. A sample of topics covered in these courses includes latex molding, dramatic character development and simulated cosmetic aging.

Multimedia Make-Up Artistry Diploma

The multimedia make-up artistry diploma program prepares graduates to work in numerous cosmetology or esthetic positions within the entertainment industry, such as fashion, theatre, photography and special events. It consists of four courses, which provides 602 total hours of instruction in the areas discussed above and in studio hairstyling techniques. Because it provides more extensive instruction in hairstyling than any of MUD's other programs, students interested in working as personal or salon make-up artists can also benefit greatly from enrolling.

Master Make-Up Artistry Diploma

This diploma program mandates completion of five courses and an equivalent 812 clock hours, making it the most in-depth of MUD's four cosmetic diploma programs. It is the only one of the program offerings requiring students to complete all five courses offered by the institution. Those courses include the fundamentals of cosmetics, studio hairstyling, theatrical make-up application and lab courses in both general and theatrical make-up application. Students enrolled in this program are required to complete several projects proving their applied knowledge in basic and theatrical cosmetic applications, such as special effects character design and fashion photo shoot preparation.
