Essential Information

Georgia does not currently have any colleges or universities that offer programs specifically for make-up artists. However, aspiring make-up artists can choose to enroll in esthetician certificate programs, which typically require students to complete a total of 33 credit hours. Besides learning about make-up application, these programs teach students about skin care and beautification techniques. Students also get the chance to complete a practicum experience to help them develop hands-on skills in the field.

In addition, some schools offer associate or bachelor's degree programs in theatre, which include courses in make-up applications. Though this is often just one or two classes within a larger degree program, students can learn application techniques that can help prepare them for a career as a make-up artist in the stage, media or performance arts fields.

Career Requirements

Performing professional esthetician services at salons and other similar establishments legally requires state licensure through the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology. To obtain licensure, individuals need to complete a 9-month, 1,000-hour course at an approved school or complete 2,000 hours of apprenticeship training, pass a practical and written exam and be at least 17. Below are short overviews of eight public 2-year colleges and 4-year universities in Georgia that offer make-up artist training, some of which prepare students for licensure, as well as a table that compares individual program offerings and tuition info at a glance.
