Essential Information

Michigan has numerous for-profit schools with esthetician programs that include make-up courses. Students are trained in basic makeup techniques and applications. Hands-on experience is gained through program laboratories and student-run salons, which are often part of the school. Applicants to esthetician programs need to have a 9th grade education or the equivalent and be at least 17 years old. Students can earn a certificate or diploma.

Career Requirements

In Michigan, estheticians who work with aspects of skin care that include make-up application must be licensed through the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Individuals must complete a 400-hour course of study at a licensed school or serve a 6-month apprenticeship, and applicants must pass the state board exam.

Aspiring make-up artists may also apply for their cosmetology license, which requires the completion of a 1,500-hour program or a 2-year apprenticeship that covers a more diverse range of beauty topics including hair care and manicuring. The 10 programs profiled can prepare students to earn their esthetician license in the state.
