Aspiring makeup artists in the Portland area can learn about makeup, hair, nails and even massage as part of their training at a variety of local makeup schools. Two downtown Portland institutions--Beau Monde College of Hair Design and Phagans' School of Hair Design--offer programs in esthetics, which involve studying facial skin and applying makeup in fashionable ways.
Beau Monde College of Hair Design's Makeup Programs
Portland-based Beau Monde College is a private, for-profit school offering training in hair removal and styling, cosmetology. The school uses the Pivot Point education system to instruct students the techniques used in hair and beauty salons.
Esthetics Program
The esthetics program at Beau Monde College of Hair Design includes courses on makeup application, facial techniques, hair removal and massage. Through classroom and hands-on learning, prepares students to take the Oregon state licensing examination.
In addition to the main esthetics program, Beau Monde offers students the opportunity to combine esthetics training with hair design or nail technology.
The hair design and esthetics program combines courses in makeup, hair styling, nail technology, esthetics, safety and sanitation, and career training.
In nail technology and esthetics, students learn about facials and application of cosmetics. Graduates will be prepared for work as a licensed nail technician and facial technician in the state of Oregon.

Phagans School of Hair Design's Makeup Programs
Phagans School of Hair Design is a 2-year private for-profit school that offers programs in hair design, esthetics and nail technology. These courses can be completed individually, or in any combination. Phagans has one campus in Portland and another in Milwaukie, a suburb of the city.
Esthetics Program
Students in the esthetics technology program learn the benefits and techniques of facials and skin treatments, along with developing their skills with makeup application. This course of study includes 50 hours of instruction on facials and treatments and 30 hours devoted to makeup, along with additional courses on tinting eyelashes and eyebrows. The program also requires study of dermatology, anatomy, electricity and chemistry.
This 250-clockhour course includes 12 hours of evaluation, 119 hours related to academics and laboratory time and 111 hours on the clinic floor. At the end of the program, students are qualified to take the written test of the Oregon State Board of Barbers and Hairdressers.
