How to Select a Marine Repair School

When choosing a marine repair school, prospective students should look for schools that offer both classroom theory and practical dock study. The school's curriculum should include marine business concepts, as well as classes in servicing, repairing and troubleshooting marine vehicles.

Program facilities and technology are also important when selecting a marine repair school. Prospective students should look for clean, up-to-date workroom with modern equipment and experienced instructors. Students may also look for schools that are part of the American Boat and Yacht Council and the Association of Marine Technicians. Schools that are affiliated with local marinas and dealerships may offer additional hands-on opportunities or internships.

Program Course Summaries

Courses in a marine repair program involve work with engines, welding, stemdrive systems, diesel engines and electronics, in addition to the core liberal arts and business curriculum. Courses are typically offered at the associate's degree level.

Marine welding courses teach student to repair aluminum and other metal fabrication that may have been destroyed on a boat. Students learn to use welding tools and to finish a job correctly. Engine courses focus on 2- and 4-stroke outboard motors and how to maintain, build and re-build these motors.
