Marine Technology Schools in Texas
There are only a few schools in Texas that offer programs in marine technology. Most award certificates or associate degrees, though there is at least one school offering programs at the baccalaureate level. Areas of study range from marine engineering systems and engine mechanics to vessel operations. Austin Community College
Located in Austin, this school offers a 2-semester certificate program at its Riverside campus for students interested in learning how to overhaul and maintain marine engines. Coursework covers techniques for mounting outboard engines, diagnosing causes of engine failure and repairing electrical systems. Students also learn how to perform tune-ups.
Cedar Valley College
This Lancaster school is part of the Dallas County Community College District. Students can complete a certificate program in marine technology that focuses on engine mechanics for outboard engines. Topics covered include marine engine tune-up and overhaul, marine electrical systems and marine drive units. Students also complete a 2-credit-hour practicum to fulfill program requirements.
San Jacinto Community College
Coursework for this Pasadena school's Associate of Applied Science in Maritime Technology program is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Students complete training in such areas as advanced navigation, maritime safety systems, marine propulsion and ship construction. Upon program completion, students are prepared for entry-level employment as maritime crew members, such as deckhands.
Texas A&M University - Galveston
Situated on Pelican Island in Galveston, this university is home to the Texas Maritime Academy. Available programs include a bachelor's degree in marine engineering technology. This program is offered as a non-license option and a license option, which is designed for U.S. Maritime Service Corps cadets who would like to become engineering officers. Curriculum emphasizes study in applied electrical and mechanical engineering, as well as marine power systems.
The university also offers a bachelor's degree program in maritime systems engineering that focuses on the design of coastal structures, such as bulkheads, and off-shore marine structures like drilling platforms. Students enrolled in these programs complete training in various workshops, such as the naval architecture lab and the school's training ship, the U.S.T.S. Texas Clipper.
