Public Health Master's Degree Programs in New York
Students interested in earning a public health master's degree in New York have roughly 20 schools to choose from. Many of these programs are offered by schools in the City University of New York (CUNY) or State University of New York (SUNY) systems, while a few others are found at private schools. Overviews of ten of the largest New York schools offering master's degrees in public health are provided below, followed by a table comparing school information and tuition costs.
Program options at this university's Mailman School of Public Health in New York City include a 2-year master's degree curriculum that allows students to also earn a certificate in their area of interest. Available fields of study include climate and health, injury prevention and control, toxicology and global health.
Other programs include a healthcare management track that's available on a full- or part-time basis as well as in an executive format. Students enrolled in this last option meet over the course of one 4-day weekend each month for 24 months. There's also an accelerated 1-year master's degree program for experienced healthcare professionals, medical students and post-doctoral students. Public health doctorates and MPH dual degree programs in fields of study ranging from business, nursing, medicine and occupational therapy are offered as well.
Students enrolled in these programs have opportunities to work with school-affiliated research centers promoting public health policy initiatives and training programs, such as the Center for Infection and Immunity and the National Center for Children in Poverty.
CUNY Brooklyn College
This Brooklyn institution is part of a 4-school consortium offering CUNY School of Public Health programs. Master of Public Health specializations offered on this campus include health care policy and administration and general public health. Students pursuing either area can choose to further specialize in maternal, child, reproductive and sexual health. Classes are offered in the evenings, and students can complete field placements in settings ranging from extension centers and hospitals to food banks and state departments.
CUNY Hunter College
Hunter College is located in New York City and houses the CUNY School of Public Health. As one of four schools in the consortium, it offers public health specializations in health policy and management, epidemiology and biostatistics, environmental and occupational health sciences, community health education and public health nutrition. All program options include core courses in urban and environmental health, biostatistics and epidemiology. Students might also be required to complete a capstone project and fieldwork experiences.
Additionally, CUNY Hunter College offers public health doctoral programs and an MS/MPH program in community and public health nursing.
CUNY Lehman College
This Bronx college is another campus offering CUNY School of Public Health programs. Master's degree candidates interested in examining how social and economic factors affect health can pursue a specialization in community-based public health and health equity. There's also a specialization in public health geographic information science (GIS). Students in this program participate in GIS research workshops and labs to learn methods for applying spatial analyses and geostatistics to the public health field. Both program options require around 40 credits of coursework in addition to 90 hours of field experience and a capstone project.
Long Island University - Brooklyn
Long Island University offers a Master of Public Health program through its School of Health Professions in Brooklyn. Students must complete 42 credits and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to receive the degree. Program curriculum includes a field practicum in addition to coursework in such topics as epidemiology, health services management and biostatistics. Students can also help create public health programming and take advantage of networking opportunities by joining the school's Public Health Club.
New York University
Located in New York City, New York University offers a master's degree through its Global Institute of Public Health. Students enrolled in this program can choose to pursue a community and international health or global health leadership concentration that includes coursework in such areas as bioterrorism, global mental health, economic development and reproductive health. There's also a concentration in public health nutrition that allows students to complete prerequisites for a dietitian internship. Opportunities to study public health abroad in countries like Brazil and South Africa are also available.
Stony Brook University
The Master of Public Health program in Stony Brook is offered through the Stony Brook University Medical Center. Students must complete 24 credits of core courses discussing techniques for detecting environmental pollutants, measuring program cost, managing public health data and conducting research, among others. Up to 15 credits of coursework in a public health practice, evaluative sciences or community health concentration are also required along with a 3-credit capstone seminar and practicum. Dual-degree program options are also available at this school and allow students to combine a Master of Public Health with a bachelor's degree, a Master of Business Administration, an MD or a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
SUNY at Albany
Students enrolled in this Albany university's public health master's degree program must complete at least 45 credits of coursework, including two internships in such settings as hospitals and public health departments. Concentrations are offered in biostatistics, social behavior and community health, biomedical sciences, health policy and management, epidemiology and environmental health.
Students can also pursue one of two interdisciplinary tracks. The preventive medicine track is open to medical school residents, while the public health practice track is for individuals who have three years or more of related public health experience. This option may be completed online. The school also offers two graduate public health certificate programs and a public health doctoral program. There's an option to combine the public health master's degree with an MD or Master of Social Work as well.
University at Buffalo
Students enrolled in this Buffalo university's 49-credit Master of Public Health program can choose one of the following five concentrations: community health and health behavior, epidemiology, health services administration, environmental health or biostatistics. They also have the option of completing field training at sites ranging from private hospitals and environmental agencies to county health departments and family advocacy centers. At least 33 of the credits need to be from the University at Buffalo; meanwhile, a maximum of 10 can be transferred and at most 7 can be waived. The university also offers a 5-year dual-degree option for students who would like to earn a Master of Public Health in Environmental Health while pursuing an MD. This curriculum allows students to earn both degrees in considerably less time than if they were obtained separately.
University of Rochester
Situated in Rochester, this university's medical center allows students in its Master of Public Health program to choose a general track or to specialize in health services research and policy, social and behavioral sciences or epidemiology. Program requirements include 44 credits of coursework in such areas as behavioral medicine, epidemiology, research methods, biostatistics and professional ethics. All students have the opportunity to participate in public health grand rounds. These seminars encourage discussion between public health professionals, faculty and students.
