Degrees at University of Houston
Students interested in earning an MBA at University of Houston have the option of three tracks at the school's C.T. Bauer College of Business. In 2011, the C.T. Bauer College of Business was named one of the best business schools in the nation by The Princeton Review's The Best 300 Business Schools.
With students enrolled from about 70 countries, Bauer is one of the most diverse business schools in the country. All applicants to University of Houston's MBA programs must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, and those applying to the full-time and evening MBA programs must take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT).
Full-Time Day MBA
Designed to be completed in just under two years, the full-time day MBA program requires 30 hours of general business courses, including legal and ethical issues in business, financial accounting, managerial analysis and strategic management. The core curriculum is accompanied by a number of elective courses targeted toward an area of concentration, like marketing, finance or human resources. In addition to a traditional classroom format, the program includes a recommended internship component, as well as other social and academic activities designed to provide students with valuable experiences in real-world situations.
Evening MBA
With flexible evening scheduling, this program attracts students from a wide variety of professional backgrounds. Although the curriculum mirrors that of the day program, the evening program requires three years of study due to class scheduling and does not require an internship component. Students must also meet for evening courses over the summer term. This program does allow students to begin the program in the spring semester.
Executive MBA (EMBA)
Designed for working professionals, the EMBA program requires that applicants have at least seven years of full-time business experience. Students in this program are assigned to teams known as cohorts by the faculty. The program is 'lock step', which means that the full schedule of classes is pre-arranged; there is no deviation or opportunity to choose electives. While an undergraduate degree is an application prerequisite, a business degree is not; applicants are not required to submit GRE or GMAT scores either. Depending on the class schedule, chosen students require either 18 or 22 months to complete the program. Between the first and second year, students participate in a 7-day international business residency trip with instructors to such destinations as Singapore, Chile, Prague or Spain.
Degrees at Texas Southern University
Founded in 1955, the Jesse H. Jones School of Business (JHJ) offers innovative MBA programs for students who choose to continue their education. The School of Business is housed in a state-of-the-art facility which allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations and circumstances.
General Business MBA
In this program, students prepare for leadership positions in the global marketplace. Applicants with bachelor's degrees from accredited schools are required to have taken the GMAT and to write a career objective essay explaining post-MBA goals. The program is 36 credits in length, with six of them taken as elective choices. This full-time program is completed in two years and includes courses such as information systems, managerial accounting and global strategic management.
MBA in Accounting or Health Care Administration (HCA)
Students who are admitted to the MBA specialization programs are required to complete an MBA core curriculum as well as concentration courses. For accounting students, these may include topics such as taxation and auditing. Accounting students may also qualify to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam after graduation. Admission requirements include an undergraduate academic background in accounting. Health care administration students can expect to take classes including health care law and bioethics, introduction to health care organizations and health policy analysis.
JD/MBA
For students who would like to develop a comprehensive understanding of law and business management, the dual Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration degree program can be completed in four years. Applicants must meet the admission requirements of both the business school and Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law. In addition to their MBA classes in accounting, management, entrepreneurship and economic analysis, students take law school classes in contracts, criminal law, civil procedures, property law and torts, among others.
Degrees at Rice University
Located in the heart of Houston, Rice University's Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business, often referred to simply as the Jones School, offers several MBA programs tailored to meet the educational needs of business professionals. In addition to degree-granting programs, the school offers a wide array of non-degree, executive education and customized courses for business and industry. More than half of the MBA students are from outside the Houston area.
Full-Time MBA
The curriculum for the full-time MBA program includes comprehensive coursework in fundamental business principles, real-world practice through both an action learning project and a summer internship, and a number of elective courses that allow students to choose an area of concentration. Concentration tracks include accounting, real estate, marketing, global business, entrepreneurship and finance. The full-time MBA program tends to attract students who have recently earned their bachelor's degree in a related field.
MBA for Professionals
This MBA program requires little-to-no career interruption as students have the option to pursue the degree through evening or weekend study. The 22-month program consists of a core curriculum of business classes plus a minimum of nine elective courses in areas such as healthcare, organizational behavior, operations and finance. In addition to that coursework, students are required to participate in two 6-day immersion periods at the university's main campus. There is a health care track available.
MBA for Executives (EMBA)
This 22-month MBA program is designed specifically for business executives and provides focused instruction in management, business strategy and leadership. This program is comprised of a rigorous course schedule taught by expert faculty that includes elective coursework in the areas of brand management, venture capital, financial reconstruction and marketing decision models. A health care track is available. Students can take advantage of an optional international experience; past destinations have included China, Central America, South America and India. With a diverse student body, this program provides an opportunity for students to share business successes and challenges as well as expand their professional network.
