Certain mediation courses, as well as the certificate and degree programs, fulfill the 40 hours of minimum training required to serve as a non-family court-ordered mediator in the state of Texas.

Abilene Christian University

Abilene Christian University in Abilene offers graduate programs for individuals interested in mediation through its Duncum Center for Conflict Resolution. Students may pursue a 15-credit-hour graduate certificate or a 36-credit-hour master's degree in conflict resolution and reconciliation. These programs are offered online and focus on developing practical skills in analyzing, addressing and managing conflict; students must also complete on-campus residencies.

In addition, the university offers a 40-hour basic mediation training program for working professionals, which is a requirement to attend a separate 30-hour advanced family mediation training program. All of the programs meet the Texas Department of Licensure and Regulation (TDLR) requirements for mediators.

Collin County Community College District

The Collin County Community College District in McKinney offers a business mediation certificate series program that provides individuals with the 40 hours of training needed to serve as a court-appointed mediator. Within the 40-hour program, students analyze various case studies and conduct role-play sessions to gain insight and experience in mediation. The four courses cover mediation in the workplace, problem-solving strategies and negotiation. The college also offers a 40-hour family law mediation training program.

Located in Dallas, El Centro College offers mediation courses as part of its continuing education program. These courses examine negotiation, divorce mediation and dispute resolution. Southern Methodist University in Dallas offers a 21-credit graduate certificate, as well as a 42-credit master's degree in dispute resolution. The university's Department of Dispute Resolution and Counseling offers both programs. Students utilize the university's Mediation Center to practice and gain experience as mediators. Both programs meet the 40-hour mediator education requirements of the TDLR.

Texas State University - San Marcos

Located in San Marcos, Texas State University - San Marcos offers a mediation certificate. This graduate-level program provides the 40 hours of training necessary to work as an entry-level mediator. This 40-hour, five-day intensive program trains individuals on the skills and knowledge needed to mediate common disputes. Students learn the principles of the mediation process, communication skills for mediation, the methods and styles of negotiations and other techniques. The program meets Texas mediation certification requirements.

The university's law school also has a mediation clinic that prepares law students to become mediators. Students resolve real disputes referred by local small claims courts. The law school also offers mediation and conflict resolution courses for its students.
