Master's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science

Medical laboratory master's degree programs are open to people new to the industry or certified medical technologists and clinical laboratory scientists. They are 2-year programs, and students can choose from various concentrations, such as microbiology, immunology and hematology. Students learn about human disease and train in biomedical sciences.

Most medical laboratory master's degree programs require students to write a research-driven thesis that demonstrates their contributions to the field. Graduates are eligible to take the national examinations to become certified clinical laboratory scientists or medical technologists.

Educational Prerequisites

A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related major is preferred. GRE scores are necessary, and work experience is encouraged. Many schools request a personal interview with candidates.

Program Coursework

It is beneficial for students to be problem solvers, analytical thinkers and detail-oriented. Some class topics are:

  • Biostatistics
  • Immunobiology
  • Genetic and molecular diagnostics
  • Laboratory management
  • Microbiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmacology
  • Toxicology

Employment Outlook and Salary Information

Clinical laboratory scientists and medical technologists are prepared to work in industry and research labs, hospitals and clinics. The need for medical and clinical laboratory technologists was projected to grow by 11.9% between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). The BLS also reported the mean annual wage of laboratory technologists was $54,050 in May 2008.

Continuing Education Information

Clinical laboratory scientists and medical technologists generally need to renew their license every two years, which requires a number of credit hours that vary according to state. A medical technology master's degree is also a good background for veterinary or medical school.
