Program at Mercy College
The School of Health and Natural Sciences at Mercy College offers a bachelor's degree program that can prepare students to work with medical laboratory technology. This program also can prepare students for a master's program in a related field.
Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science
This program consists of 125 credits and features three years of science and general education courses along with an internship at a clinical laboratory. Required courses include human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, immunology and organic chemistry.
The one-year internship must take place within a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). Mercy College has affiliations with schools that offer the required internship program in Danbury, Connecticut, and Brooklyn, New York. The internship experience consists of medical conferences and lectures, and students also might be required to complete a capstone project. Upon completion of the program, students are qualified to take certification exams through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification.
Program at Saint Thomas Aquinas College
Students can pursue a bachelor's degree in medical technology through the college's School of Arts and Sciences.
Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology
This program is heavily based on scientific concepts and includes much of the same coursework that's found in the college's biology program. Major course requirements include anatomy and physiology, organic chemistry and general physics.
Students gain medical technology education and experience through a full-time clinical training program at a medical technology school approved by the American Medical Association and ASCP. Saint Thomas Aquinas College has a formal agreement with the School of Medical Technology of the Valley Hospital in New Jersey, but only six students are admitted each year. Although students can go to other schools to complete clinical training, they must individually apply at each school and could face competition for admission.
Program at CUNY Bronx Community College
CUNY Bronx Community College has modern medical technology facilities available for students to use throughout their studies. Students interested in pursuing a bachelor's degree can do so through an agreement the school has with York College.
Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology
This two-year program requires students to complete 66 credits. Before students can begin program coursework, they need to complete pre-sequence courses in English, chemistry, math and biology. Students go on to take courses in microbiology and infection control, clinical chemistry and urinalysis, diagnostic microbiology and bodily fluids.
The program gives students an opportunity to learn at their own pace through supplemental models and software programs. Toward the end of the program, students are required to participate in a clinical internship. This program meets the education requirements for licensure as a clinical laboratory technician in New York State.
