Essential Information

Medical schools in Texas offer traditional Doctor of Medicine programs as well as research-oriented master's and doctoral degree programs. Some schools offer dual program options that lead to both a Doctor of Medicine degree and a degree or certificate in a related field, such as public health, medical research, surgery or medical sciences. Students in Doctor of Medicine programs complete medical coursework and clinical rotations, and dual programs include additional research, coursework and sometimes clinical practice. Research-oriented programs often offer several concentrations in which students can focus their studies and research projects.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston has numerous degree programs available to students who wish to pursue a career in medicine. In addition to several programs geared toward those aspiring to become doctors, there is a clinical research master's degree program that provides students with experience in advanced scientific and medical theories. Several dual-degree doctoral programs are available too.

The standalone Doctor of Medicine program includes three years of courses in the sciences and a fourth year clerkship during which students gain training in ambulatory and critical care techniques. Those seeking a Doctor of Medicine degree can enroll in a dual program that also leads to a Master of Public Health in Sciences degree or an oral and maxillofacial surgery certificate. The latter option is available as a 4-year or 6-year program and requires a dentistry degree for admission.
