Medical Schools in Texas with Degree Program Overviews

Students seeking medical schools in Texas can look to multidisciplinary options offered at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and Texas A&M University. Both universities have Doctor of Medicine programs available, in addition to combination Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs. UTHealth has two joint Doctor of Medicine programs with a Master of Public Health in Sciences or a Certificate in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery.

University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston's Medical Programs

UTHealth has numerous degree programs available to students who wish to pursue a career in medicine. Graduate students enrolled in the UTHealth residency program have 25 disciplines to choose from, with a transitional year program also available.

Master of Science in Clinical Research

This 2-year degree program at the University of Texas provides students with experience in advanced scientific and medical theories. These theories focus on research practices, including epidemiology research, health care principles and policies, research workshops and scientific writing.

Doctor of Medicine/Master of Public Health in Sciences

This graduate degree program is a joint sponsorship from the University of Texas School of Public Health and the University of Texas School of Medicine. It is designed to meet the requirements of both an M.D. and M.P.H. Students gain experience through courses in advanced sciences and electives, while completing required medical school clerkships and seminars.

Doctor of Medicine

Students enrolled in the M.D. program take courses in a variety of sciences, including biochemistry, anatomy classes, microbiology, neuroscience and pharmacology. Fourth year students complete a clerkship, where they gain training in ambulatory and critical care techniques. They are also numerous one-month electives available to M.D. students.

Doctor of Medicine/Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

This option is available as a 4-year or 6-year program. For admission, students must have a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDS) degree. Students who complete the 6-year program receive a Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with his or her Doctor of Medicine degree. Students spend the first year with the oral and maxillofacial surgery department and the fifth year in surgical internship, which includes a 5-month rotation in the department. Program graduates will have received adequate training in treating diseases and oral injuries, and an understanding of hard and soft tissue properties.

Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy

The M.D./Ph.D. degree program at UTHealth is a combination program between the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Studies and their Medical School. Students complete courses in advanced science techniques, research principles, health care policies and procedures. Program graduates are eligible for both degrees after seven years of enrollment.

Texas A&M University's Medical Programs

Prospective medical students at Texas A&M University can choose from two medical degree programs through the School of Medicine. Students pursuing a M.D. may opt to enroll in the joint M.D./Ph.D. in Medical Sciences program to receive both degrees upon program completion.

Doctor of Medicine

The M.D. program at the Texas A&M School of Medicine has seven areas of emphasis available, including biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, neurosciences and space life sciences, with each tract having a specialized curriculum. Students participate in laboratory rotations, gain experience in a variety of research areas and environments and select topics based on personal interests or career objectives.

Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Sciences

The M.D./Ph.D. in Medical Sciences degree program at Texas A&M requires approximately 7-8 years for completion. Students can complete the program two ways. The first option has students completing basic medical sciences courses for the first two years. The remaining years focus on research and study, during which students complete electives tailored to their specific disciplines.

The second option has graduate students spending three years in medical school, followed by 3-4 years of graduate school, before returning to medical school to finish their last year. Membership in the M.D./Ph.D. Journal Club is required for the duration of the degree program.
