Medical Sonography Programs in New York

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a professional certification is the usual requirement for working in the field of medical sonography. Certification requirements include completion of an accredited program in sonography and a passing score on the American Registry Diagnostic Medical Sonography exam.

Of the eight schools profiled below, five are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the certifying body associated with the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. These include Hudson Valley Community College, Long Island University in Brooklyn, the Rochester Institute of Technology, SUNY Downstate Medical Center and Western Suffolk BOCES.

Hudson Valley Community College (SUNY)

Hudson Valley Community College is located in Troy and offers certificate programs in diagnostic medical sonography and echocardiography. The programs are open to students who hold an associate degree in an allied health field, as well as those with a bachelor's degree and 400 hours of relevant experience.

The diagnostic medical curriculum includes 44 credits of coursework in abdominal, gynecological and obstetrical pathophysiology, cross-sectional anatomy and sonography technology. Students also have the chance to participate in three clinical hospital experiences, and qualified graduates may sit for the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography exam.

Students pursuing the echocardiography certificate complete 43 credits of coursework and pursue topics in heart anatomy and pathology, echocardiography concepts and instrumentation. They also complete three echocardiography clinics.

Institute of Allied Medical Professions - New York

Students enrolled at the Institute of Allied Medical Professions in Manhattan can earn certificates in diagnostic medical, cardiac or vascular sonography. The diagnostic medical sonography certificate program consists of classroom and laboratory work, and students acquire hands-on experience at the on-campus ultrasound laboratory. The also pursue clinical training at a number of area facilities, including imaging and radiology centers, health care centers and hospitals.

The vascular sonography certificate can be completed in just a little over a year and features eight months of lectures and lab work, as well as five months of full-time clinical training (800 hours). The cardiac medical sonography program also takes 13 months to complete; along with courses in cardiac sonography and hemodynamics, it requires a 5-month internship. Vascular and cardiac classes are offered on a day and evening basis.

Long Island University - Brooklyn

The Brooklyn campus of Long Island University has a Bachelor of Science program that can help students acquire the training they need to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography exam (abdominal, cardiac, gynecological and obstetrical areas). The first two years of the program are grounded in the liberal arts and include courses in human anatomy and physiology. Professional training occurs during the third and fourth years, where students acquire hands-on clinical, laboratory and scanning experience.

Rochester Institute of Technology

At the Rochester Institute of Technology, students can earn a certificate or bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Admission requirements for the 53-credit certificate program include an associate or a bachelor's degree.

The 125-credit bachelor's curriculum includes first-year studies in medical genetics and terminology, biology and computer applications. During the third and fourth years, undergraduates learn about sonography instrumentation, physics and techniques. They also take a course in patient care and complete clinical internships at local medical facilities. A similar course of study can be found in the certificate program, but general education courses are not required.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center

Located in Brooklyn, the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center offers a bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical imaging for students with transferable undergraduate credits. The 71-credit program takes two full years to complete and consists entirely of upper-division coursework in anatomy and physiology, sonography physics and research. Future professionals also study obstetrics and gynecology, abdominal diseases and cardiology. Practical experience is acquired by way of five clinical internships. Through a 1-credit elective, students also have the opportunity to work at the Brooklyn Free Clinic.

Trocaire College

Buffalo-based Trocaire College has a 36-credit diagnostic medical sonography certificate program that can be completed in one year. Prerequisites include an associate degree, a bachelor's degree or a diploma in radiologic technology. In addition to three clinical practicums, students take courses in abdominal, obstetrical and pelvic sonography. They also study cross-sectional anatomy, special sonography procedures and ultrasound physics. Certificate requirements also include a research seminar.

Upstate Medical University (SUNY)

Upstate Medical University in Syracuse offers both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Professional Studies in medical imaging with a track in diagnostic medical sonography. The Bachelor of Science is designed for students without prior experience in the field, and the prerequisites include 60 credits of transferable coursework. In addition to completing four clinical practicums and a senior project, students learn how to perform abdominal, gynecological and obstetrical ultrasounds. They also study advanced physiology, health care ethics pathology and topographic anatomy.

Undergraduates who are eligible for or hold a certification in radiography may also be interested in the Bachelor of Professional Studies. Prerequisites include an associate's degree, and the 2-year curriculum is nearly identical to that of the aforementioned degree program.

Western Suffolk BOCES

Located in Northport, Western Suffolk BOCES has a certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography. The program takes 24 months to complete and combines the study of basic and medical science with a number of 3-month clinical rotations in doctor's offices and hospital facilities. Qualified graduates are eligible for the diagnostic medical sonography registry exams.
