Medical transcriptionists generally train by completing either a certificate (1-year) program or an associate (2-year) degree in medical transcription from a community or vocational college. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), many medical transcriptionists are able to telecommute from home-based offices as employees or subcontractors for hospitals or transcription services or as independent contractors. Completion of an associate's degree or certificate program that includes coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, healthcare documentation legal issues, and English grammar and punctuation is highly recommended for the aspiring transcriptionist, but not always required.
