Medical Transcriptionist Fast Fact

Medical transcriptionists generally train by completing either a certificate (1-year) program or an associate (2-year) degree in medical transcription from a community or vocational college. Programs include courses in medical terminology, anatomy, legal issues and English (punctuation and grammar), as well as a supervised internship.

Medical transcriptionists listen to medical information that has been dictated and use transcription hardware and computer software to prepare medical reports for hospitals, doctors' offices and medical care facilities. This four-quarter program offers instruction in word-processing skills, grammar and punctuation, spelling, anatomy, specialized medical and surgical terminology, diagnostic tests and procedures.

Students complete supervised practica in local health care facilities during their final quarters. Graduates are prepared for entry-level employment in hospitals, clinics and medical transcription services.

Green River Community College's Medical Transcription Programs

The Business Division incorporates business administration, business education, business management, court reporting and medical transcription courses, providing graduates with the skills and knowledge needed for careers in business and technology.

Certificate of Proficiency, Medical Transcriptionist

Students learn medical terminology, including anatomy, diagnoses, procedures, and therapies, and be trained in various computer hardware and transcription software systems. Many of these credits can be applied to other business degree programs. Graduates will qualify for entry-level jobs as medical transcriptionists.

This program prepares students to prepare medical records and reports using a stenographic equipment. Students are taught anatomy, physiology and medical terminology, disease processes, and medications and their dosages.

In addition to the traditional office-based job environments, many stenoscriptionists work from a home-office as subcontractors to doctors and medical facilities.
