Metal Fabrication Schools with Program Overviews
Metal fabricators - welders, sheet metal workers, ironworkers and other precision metal workers - need training in blueprint reading, welding skills and metallurgy. Metal fabrication programs are offered at 2-year community and vocational colleges, and some fabricators learn through on-the-job training.
How To Choose a Metal Fabrication School
Metal fabrication involves cutting, stamping, forming, machining and welding. To carry out designs produced by engineers, metal fabricators need to understand blueprints, basic math and computer diagrams. When choosing a program, students may want to consider one that introduces and offers in-depth practice in these subjects.
Metal fabrication can be learned on the job, but students who complete a certificate or diploma program before entering the workforce may have more employment opportunities. Students should look for state or regionally-accredited programs that have good job placement rates for graduates. Oftentimes, training in metal fabrication is included in welding or sheet metal programs, so a program with one of these titles may be a good option.
Students with specific interests in a specialty within fabrication, such as welding or casting, may want to be sure that the program they choose offers coursework in that area. Although a curriculum that covers many areas will give students a solid foundation on which to build their skills, a program with a specific focus may allow students to specialize in an area after graduation.
Finally, students should consider looking for programs with up-to-date equipment and that value safety. For example, welding and metal cutting create hazardous fumes, so students may want to consider metal fabrication programs that invest in state-of-the-art ventilation systems along with safety equipment.
Metal Fabrication Program Overview
Certificate in Metal Fabrication
Certificate programs in foundry and metal casting, welding and sheet metal fabrication can usually be earned in one year of full-time study. Coursework in these programs includes applied math, oxy/acetylene welding, gas tungsten arc welding, pipe welding and safety principles. A high school diploma or the equivalent is required for admission.
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Metal Fabrication
A 2-year A.A.S. degree program in metal fabrication includes much of the same coursework as a certificate programs in the same field, but also includes general education classes. An A.A.S. program curriculum may also include in-depth coursework in metallurgy. Some schools offer more specialized programs in the field, such as an associate's degree program in nanofabrication.
