Ultrasound Programs in Michigan

Sonography programs teach students how to perform ultrasound procedures. Students pursuing sonography education and training in the state of Michigan can find programs at 2-year and 4-year colleges. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is responsible for accrediting sonography programs.

Baker College of Auburn Hills

Students enrolled at the Baker College of Auburn Hills can pursue an associate's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. The program teaches students how to use ultrasound equipment and create the images that will be used to diagnose diseases and conditions. Courses teach students about anatomy and physiology, anatomical structures and patient care.

Baker College of Owosso

The Baker College of Owosso has a diagnostic medical sonography associate's degree. The curriculum provides students with the knowledge, technical skills and communication abilities to work in the field. Graduates are prepared for employment in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic lab centers and out-patient centers.

Delta College

Delta College is located in University Center and offers a diagnostic medical sonography certificate and associate's degree. The certificate is 73-74 credits, and the associate's degree in 86-90 credits. Both programs take five semesters to complete; however, those with a degree can continue their education at the bachelor's degree level. Students in these programs are required to complete general education requirements, major courses, lab work and clinical practicums.

Ferris State University

Situated in Big Rapids, Ferris State University has an 80-credit associate's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. The program is six semesters and includes three clinical internships. Courses cover topics in abdominal imaging, cross sectional anatomy, OB/GYN imaging, hemodynamics, sonographic instrumentation and sonography physics.

Grand Valley State University

Located in Allendale, Grand Valley State University features a bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Students have the option of choosing concentrations in general sonography, adult echocardiography and pediatric echocardiography and adult echocardiography and vascular sonography. The program requires that all students take several courses in radiologic and imaging sciences and ultrasound physics. Students in all concentrations also must complete lab work and clinical requirements.

Jackson Community College

Jackson Community College is located in Jackson, and students at the school can pursue a sonography associate's degree with concentrations in cardiac, general and vascular sonography. Students in the cardiac sonography concentration take courses in adult echo, cardiovascular principles and sonographic instrumentation. The concentration also requires that students participate in 1,136 hours of clinical work.

In addition to coursework, the general sonography program requires that students complete 1,350 hours of supervised clinical work. The vascular sonography concentration features 1,040 hours of clinical work and courses in peripheral arterial, Doppler imaging and cerebrovascular imaging.

Lake Michigan College

Lake Michigan College sits in Benton Harbor and offers a diagnostic medical sonography associate's degree. The program is 79 credits and covers topics in abdomen sonography, OB/GYN sonography, sonographic physics, sonography lab applications and vascular sonography. Five clinical experiences are also part of the program.

Lansing Community College

Located in Lansing, Lansing Community College has a 69-credit diagnostic medical sonography associate's degree that includes three clinical experience courses. Students also take courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, sonographic scanning, sonographic instrumentation, sonographic physics, sonographic positioning, abdominal sonography and OB/GYN sonography.

Oakland Community College

Oakland Community College sits in Bloomfield Hills and offers an associate's degree in diagnostic medical sonography. Students are required to complete a minimum of 73 credits. The curriculum includes three practicums and courses in sonography fundamentals, cross-sectional anatomy, abdominal pathological imaging, OB/GYN pathological imaging and sonography physics.
