Students in the Mobile area can choose from a variety of degree programs through both public and private institutions. The following are the top three schools in Mobile for academic program variety.

1 - Spring Hill College

Located in Mobile, Spring Hill College is a four-year, private not-for-profit that offers approximately 53 programs. The campus sits on about 450 acres and was founded in 1830. In 2013, the U.S. News & World Report ranked this school as 17th for Best Regional Universities (South). Popular majors for 2011 graduates included business, the biomedical sciences, literature, health professions and psychology.

2 - Bishop State Community College

Bishop State Community College in Mobile ranks second in the area for most program variety by offering 50 different programs. Students can opt to study construction trades, the human sciences, liberal arts or precision production, among other areas of study. This community college sees nearly 4,000 students each year. The overall graduation rate reached 14% in the fall of 2008.

3 - University of Mobile

The University of Mobile is affiliated with the Baptist church and offers 47 programs. In 2013, the U.S. News & World Report ranked this school as 28th for Best Regional Colleges (South). It was established on 830 acres in 1961. Popular majors with 2011 graduates included the fields of business, education, healthcare, the liberal arts and theology. Students can earn associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees.

Lowest Net Price

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) determines the net price, or cost, of U.S. universities by deducting the amount of financial aid freshman students at the main campus of each school receive from the total cost of attendance. Find below the three traditional schools that offer the lowest net prices for advanced degrees in the Mobile area from 2010-2011.

1 - Bishop State Community College

The lowest net price in the Mobile area is available at Bishop State Community College with a total of $3,291. During the 2012-2013 academic year, in-state tuition was $4,140 and out-of-state tuition reached $7,410. Books and supplies were estimated to cost $1,500. In addition, the NCES estimated that, from 2010-2011, roughly 92% of all beginning students received some form of financial aid.

2 - University of South Alabama

The University of South Alabama in Mobile has the second lowest net price in the area at $8,268. This public university was founded in 1963 in the upper Gulf Coast. There are roughly 200 student organizations, 50 undergraduate degree programs and more than 40 master's degree programs available. In-state tuition for the 2012-2013 academic year was $6,660, while out-of-state tuition was $13,020. Books and supplies cost about $1,200 per year. During the 2010-2011 academic year, roughly 91% of all undergraduate students received some form of financial aid.

3 - University of Mobile

The University of Mobile has a net price of $17,247, which is the 3rd lowest for the area. Tuition at this four-year, private not-for-profit school was $18,080 for the 2012-2013 academic year. In addition, books and supplies were estimated to cost $1,630 annually. On-campus living expenses during this time were approximately $11,500. For the 2010-2011 academic year, roughly 99% of the undergraduate student body received some form of financial aid.

Highest Graduation Rate

Graduation rates are determined by calculating the progress of undergraduate students as they pursue bachelor's degrees for the first time. Information was used from the main campus of each school. Rates were based on the established 'normal' amount of time it takes to complete an undergraduate degree program. Below are the three schools with the highest graduation rates in the Mobile area.

1 - Spring Hill College

In the fall of 2005, Spring Hill College had an overall graduation rate of 61%, which is the highest rate in the Mobile area. Retention rates ranged from 76% for full-time students to 50% for those studying part-time. The six-year graduation rate for students was estimated between 60% and 61%.

2 - University of Mobile

The University of Mobile, in the fall of 2005, had an overall graduation rate of 43%, with a transfer-out rate of 36%. The retention rate for full-time undergraduate students was 70% at that time. In addition, the retention rate for similar part-time students was 50%.

3 - University of South Alabama

The University of South Alabama has the third highest graduation rate in Mobile at 38% in the fall of 2005. The transfer-out rate that same year was 17%, and 65% of full-time undergraduates were retained from 2010-2011. The retention rate for part-time students, on the other hand, was only 36%. In 2011, popular majors at this school included nursing, education, communication, business administration and general studies.

Lowest Student-Faculty Ratio

Student-faculty ratios determine classroom size and how much personalized attention a student has the opportunity to receive while working towards earning a degree. The schools in Mobile offer similar ratios, ranging from 13-21 students per teacher. The following are the top three schools offering degree programs with the lowest student-faculty ratios.

1 - Spring Hill College

The lowest student-faculty ratio in Mobile is 13:1, which is held by two schools in the area, including Spring Hill College. This school enrolls close to 1,500 students annually, and keeps about 85 full-time and 40 part-time faculty members on staff. According to the U.S. News & World Report, more than 55% of classes have fewer than 20 students, while about 44% have between 20 and 49 students enrolled. About 63% of the student body is female.

2 - University of Mobile

Ranked second is the University of Mobile with a student-faculty ratio of 13:1 - tied with Spring Hill College. This university enrolls more than 1,700 students annually. In addition, the faculty is comprised of about 170 faculty members, split evenly between those employed full-time and those working part-time. According to U.S. News & World Report, the majority of classes have fewer than 20 students at this institution.

3 - University of South Alabama

The third lowest student-faculty ratio in Mobile is available at the University at South Alabama with a 21:1 ratio. Each year, this four-year, public institution enrolls nearly 15,000 students. According to the U.S. News & World Report, about 56% of the student body at this school is male. In addition, more than 700 full-time and 300 part-time faculty members were on staff in the fall of 2011.
