Since naturopathy involves a variety of integrated natural techniques, including chiropractic manipulation, coaching psychology and nutrition, there is only one school near Atlanta that may serve as an acceptable alternative to a designated naturopathy school. - Life University is a health sciences school that offers the world's largest doctorate degree in chiropractic program, which may lay the foundation for a career as a naturopathic physician, as well as other certificate and bachelor's programs that are compatible with naturopathic principles. The university is located in Marietta, Georgia, about 16.5 miles from Atlanta, and is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) and the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
Undergraduates at Life University must take general education courses in English composition, literature, communication or humanities, as well as science, mathematics, computer technology and social science. Courses in psychology are part of the chiropractic, nutrition and dietetic curricula. Applicants to the Doctor of Chiropractic program must hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited school; undergraduate coursework in math and science is also required. University resources include two health care centers and a clinic where chiropractic students may practice
Life University's pre-chiropractic program is designed for students who want to pursue an advanced degree in health or chiropractics. The program takes 7-11 quarters to complete and does not result in a degree. The pre-chiropractic core includes courses in biology, anatomy, organic chemistry and biochemistry, along with physics, physiology and algebra. Students must also take 52-63 credits of electives in science and math, such as cell biology and genetics.
Certificate in Coaching Psychology
The 63-credit coaching psychology program provides a holistic model for promoting personal and professional development. Once enrolled, students learn about the ethical and legal issues associated with the field and take courses in life coaching and psychology. They also participate in a coaching practicum and complete a 3-hour written examination. The curriculum at Life University conforms to the guidelines set forth by the International Coaching Federation.
Associate of Science in Coaching Psychology
This program consists of 98 credit hours and includes many of the same core courses required for the certificate. To graduate, students must complete all psychology courses with a minimum grade of C. They also take a 3-hour written exam and participate in an exit interview with psychology faculty.
Bachelor of Science in Psychology - Coaching Track
The Bachelor of Science program requires core coursework in ethics and law, statistics, biopsychology and life coaching. Topics in abnormal, social and personality psychology are also part of the program. Additional requirements include a coaching practicum. Through electives, undergraduates who are interested in naturopathy can study the psychology of the mind and body and the psychosocial aspects of pain management.
Bachelor of Science in Dietetics
The dietetics curriculum includes courses in food preparation and science, medical terminology, menu planning, alternative nutrition and nutritional therapy. Classes focus on the effect of nutrition through the lifecycle and how it can be used as a therapeutic tool. Students can also learn about vitamins and minerals. Many of the courses have a lab component, which requires lab coats, aprons, head coverings and appropriate shoes.
The dietetic program can prepare graduates for the further requirements needed to become a Registered Dietitian. Graduates of the program may be accepted into the school's 9-month clinical dietetic internship program.
Bachelor of Science in Nutrition
This program includes many of the same courses found in the dietetics program, as well as training in research methodology. Courses in microbiology, organic chemistry and biochemistry, as well as pathology, physics and human development are also required. This program does not prepare students for careers as Registered Dietitians.
Doctor of Chiropractic
Graduate students in this program take courses in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, along with embryology, diagnosis and endocrinology. During their first year, students complete chiropractic-specific courses in spinal anatomy, muscular-skeletal anatomy and chiropractic philosophy. Courses cover physiology, pathology and radiology. By the third year, students begin working with patients under supervision. This is a full-time program and should be completed in four years.
