Essential Information

There are no naturopathy schools in Florida, and the practice of naturopathic medicine is not permitted in Florida as a stand-alone medical practice. Since naturopathy involves natural techniques, including massage, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and homeopathy, schools that offer programs in these techniques might be acceptable alternatives to prospective naturopathy students or professionals wishing to enhance their medical practice with naturopathic modalities.

Students in Florida interested in earning an education in a field related to naturopathy can choose from certificate, associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs. Experience requirements might apply for admission to some programs. Students are encouraged to practice hands-on skills with educator supervision, and some programs offer fieldwork experiences or internship opportunities.

Career Requirements

Florida requires massage therapists to be licensed. Licensing requirements include completion of an approved course and a passing grade on an approved certification examination in therapeutic massage. The massage therapy schools described below are all approved by the state, and graduates of these programs are qualified to sit for the required licensing examinations.

Acupuncturists must also be licensed. Licensure requires the completion of an approved training program and a passing grade on the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) exam or an approved Florida state exam. Chinese herbology is included in the scope of acupuncture practice in Florida.

The state doesn't regulate the practice of holistic nursing. However, registered nurses who want to work in the area of advanced holistic nursing are qualified to take a national board certification exam after completing a master's program in nursing, holistic nursing coursework and experience requirements.

There are over 20 Florida schools that offer programs compatible with naturopathic techniques. This article discusses ten schools that provide a variety of programs, including massage therapy, Oriental medicine, acupuncture and holistic nursing.
