In a medical emergency, the first to respond are trained individuals, certified to treat and stabilize patients before arrival at a hospital. In the State of New Jersey, there are two emergency medical technician certification levels, basic and paramedic. Camden County College, in Blackwood, and Union County College, in Cranford, both offer programs designed to prepare students for certification as basic and paramedic level EMTs.

In the paramedic 1 course, students learn about the rules and regulations of the profession, review bodily systems and learn pharmacology, drug dosages and procedures for patient assessment. The paramedic 2 course includes electrocardiology. Students are expected to be able to relay a complete medical report to dispatchers and understand the procedures involved in the administration of drugs carried on ambulances and the associated side effects.
