New Jersey EMT Certification Programs with School Information

In a medical emergency, the first to respond are trained individuals, certified to treat and stabilize patients before arrival at a hospital. In the State of New Jersey, there are two emergency medical technician certification levels, basic and paramedic. Camden County College, in Blackwood, and Union County College, in Cranford, both offer programs designed to prepare students for certification as basic and paramedic level EMTs.

Camden County College EMT Certification Programs

At Camden County College, students interested in emergency medical science as a career may prepare for certification tests as emergency medical technicians at EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic levels. Camden Community College has three locations in New Jersey and serves 15,198 undergraduate students.

EMT-Basic Certification

For basic-level certification, students must complete 110 hours of course work in patient assessment, stabilization of injuries with splints or bandages, airway management and childbirth in emergency situations. This program also includes 10 hours in a clinical setting for hands-on training.

EMT-Paramedic Certification

Students in this program must have EMT-Basic certification prior to enrollment in Camden County College's paramedic sciences program, which prepares students for certification as paramedics. This program includes several degree options and includes coursework in basic anatomy and physiology and biology; field-specific courses are also available, including theory of paramedic care, pharmacology for paramedics and three terms of clinical practice prior to a paramedic internship and later, residency.

Union County College's EMT Certification Programs

Union County College offers certification at the EMT-Basic level, and students can prepare for paramedic certification through the didactic paramedic training program. There are approximately 11,300 students attending at four campuses across the state.

Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification

At Union County College, the EMT certification course for basic-level certification includes 60 hours of lecture and 30 hours of laboratory course work. This 4-month program uses skill labs and lectures to prepare students for the EMT-Basic certification test from the New Jersey Department of Health.

Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Didactic Program

Students must be certified as basic-level emergency medical technicians and sponsored by an area hospital for acceptance into this program. This program includes written and practical examinations, skills rotations and lectures. In the paramedic 1 course, students learn about the rules and regulations of the profession, review bodily systems and learn pharmacology, drug dosages and procedures for patient assessment. The paramedic 2 course includes electrocardiology. Students are expected to be able to relay a complete medical report to dispatchers and understand the procedures involved in the administration of drugs carried on ambulances and the associated side effects. They should also be able to make the necessary treatment decision for situations described by instructors. Upon completion of this program, students will be prepared to take the state's paramedic certification test.
