School Business Administrator Certification Schools in New Jersey
Prospective students looking to earn a school business administrator certification have few programmatic options in New Jersey. School business administrator certification is one of the most common types of business administrator certification programs. These graduate-level certification programs focus on developing leadership and organizational skills for school business administrators.
In order to work as a provisional school business administrator in New Jersey, all applicants must hold a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) granted by the state. To earn a CE, applicants must hold a master's degree or higher from an accredited institution or a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. In addition, all applicants must have at least 18 semester hours of coursework in economics, organizational theory, law, management, accounting and finance at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
Once these requirements are met, an applicant must work for two years under a state-approved residency and mentorship program. Upon completion of this requirement, applicants will be issued a standard certificate that grants them permanent certification. The six schools profiled below represent the only schools in New Jersey that offer school business administrator certification programs.
Georgian Court University
Lakewood's Georgian Court University provides prospective students with the opportunity to earn a master's degree in administration and leadership, which fulfills the school business administrator certification requirements of the state. Graduates also qualify for school principle certification. Students are specifically trained to be educational administrators for an inclusive school district. The 36-credit program includes courses in curricular and organizational leadership, school law and financial management, and can be completed on-campus or online. In addition to the general admission requirements applicable to all graduate programs, applicants must also hold standard teaching certificate in New Jersey and have three years of full-time teaching experience.
Located in Union, Kean University offers students a master's degree in educational administration for school business administrators and a post master's degree certification program for school business administrators through the Nathan Weiss Graduate College. The master's degree program satisfies New Jersey's educational requirements for school business administrators and is approved by the state, though upon graduation, students must complete the mentorship requirements to obtain official certification. The program includes 33 credits of coursework, fieldwork experience and a comprehensive exam. A cumulative GPA of 3.0, GRE scores and two letters of recommendation, in addition to other documents, are required to gain admission to the program.
The post master's degree program is approved by the state and satisfies the educational requirements for the CE. To enter the program, students must hold a master's degree, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, hold a Standard Instructional or Educational Services Certificate with two years of professional experience and submit transcripts, a personal statement and a resume. The entire program consists of 24 credits of coursework, including six credits of administration and supervision fieldwork. The program's general classes include training in accounting, building planning, school law and educational finance management.
Montclair State University
Montclair State University is located in the city of Montclair. The university's College of Education and Human Services offers students a school business administrator certification program, as well as a nine-month accelerated program in this field study. Both programs train students in the coordination, management and supervision of a school's business affairs and include courses in education law, school finance and collective bargaining. Both programs also prepare students to become certified school business administrators. The accelerated program consists of on-campus and online courses and is designed for students who work full-time. In addition to the general admission requirements of the university, students interested in either program must hold a master's degree or a CPA license.
Lawrenceville-based Rider University has one school business administrator certification program. The program is designed to meet New Jersey's educational and mentorship requirements for school business administrators, though all students are expected to have already completed the state's economics and accounting course requirements prior to entering the program. However, Rider does offer a conditional acceptance into the program in special cases. The curriculum is composed of seven courses that must be taken sequentially. In addition to courses in educational leadership, educational law, fiscal management and school facility development, all students must complete two semester-length courses under the supervision of a mentor that end in a capstone project directly related to the improvement of a school. A required internship experience is also included as part of the program from the start, and continues throughout the duration of the program.
Saint Peter's University
New Jersey City's Saint Peter's University offers students one school business administrator certification program. This short program includes six courses for a total of 18 credits. Course topics include supervision foundations, school law and finance and accounting principles. All of the courses are designed to fulfill the educational requirements of the state for certification. In order to enter the program, students must hold an approved master's degree or a CPA license.
Thomas Edison State College
Located in Trenton, Thomas Edison State College has a master's degree program in management with a specialization in school business administration. The program is designed for students looking to earn a school business administrator certification for preschool and K-12 school districts. 12 of the credits earned in the 36-credit program are directly applied toward earning the certification, which includes courses in budgeting, community partnerships, school law and instruction-based technology. Upon completing the program, students must still complete an internship, pass an exam and gain five years of professional education experience to earn the certification. The program is also available online.
