North Carolina State University's Engineering Programs

The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University offers 18 majors resulting in a bachelor's degree. Graduate degree program focuses are available in areas such as aerospace, biological, biomedical, civil, computer, electrical, industrial and nuclear engineering. There are also several online learning options. A cross-section of programs are outlined below.

Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering

Students take coursework in engineering statistics, structural properties of engineering materials, aerospace vehicle design, propulsion and departmental electives. Additionally, they gain hands-on experience through lab studies. As part of a team, they also complete a yearlong capstone course where they design a project and complete a written report.

Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering

Students learn how to improve and maintain the environment through classes in waste management, hydraulics and transportation planning. They learn how to build structures and facilities to manage pollution and limit harmful impact on the planet.

Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering

This program is designed for holders of bachelor's degrees in engineering that are interested in focusing on nuclear engineering. It's offered as a non-thesis, on-campus option or a distance-learning option. Students can complete this program in 15 months.

Master of Science in Computer Science

This research-based program is offered as a thesis or non-thesis program; the non-thesis option is typically chosen by students planning to advance to doctoral studies. Classes totaling 31 credits discuss algorithms, software engineering, artificial intelligence and networking. A distance-learning option is one of the possible tracks.

Ph.D. in Operations Research

This 72-credit-hour program includes the same course requirements as the school's master's degree program for operations research, such as linear programming, stochastic process and computer simulation techniques. It also consists of ongoing seminars and requires researching, writing and defending a dissertation. Students use mathematical modeling and analysis to find solutions to human decision-making problems.

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Engineering Programs

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University serves more than 1,667 students through its College of Engineering. These students can earn undergraduate and graduate degrees in one of seven departments, including civil, architectural and environmental engineering; computational science and engineering; or mechanical engineering. A sampling of program options is available below.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Geomatics

Geomatics is an area of engineering that measures and maps geographic data used for mapping, civil engineering and other purposes. Students in this 124-credit program learn about cartography, surveying, geographic information systems and adjustment computations as they prepare for a comprehensive land-surveying exam that prepares them for professional licensure.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

This curriculum is comprised of five areas, including environmental, transportation and structural studies. Students learn about planning and constructing a variety of civil building projects.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering

Students may choose to complete a thesis, project or extended coursework to graduate. Credit hours range from 24-33 depending on the student's chosen track. Core classes include the advanced study of thermodynamics and chemical reactions.

Master of Science in Industrial Engineering

With a thesis or project option, this program explores the process of developing efficient organizational systems in business and industry. It's offered with specializations in management systems, production systems, operations research and human-computer interface.

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering

This program is intended for those interested in scientific research in the field of machine and tool operation and development. Students are expected to engage in individual research in a field of their choosing within the mechanical engineering discipline. Doctoral courses cover subjects such as continuum mechanics, fixtures and mechanical metallurgy. Students also complete a dissertation based on original research.
