Essential Information

North Carolina schools offer engineering degree programs at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels. Most careers in engineering require a bachelor's degree for entry-level opportunities, although research-oriented careers normally require graduate study. Some disciplines offered include chemical, civil, industrial, electrical, mechanical, nuclear, aerospace and environmental engineering. Students typically participate in lab studies and complete projects, such as a thesis, dissertation or capstone. Online engineering programs are also available, especially at the master's degree level.

North Carolina State University at Raleigh

Featuring several online learning options, the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University at Raleigh offers 18 majors resulting bachelor's degrees, including programs in aerospace and environmental engineering. The aerospace engineering program includes hands-on lab studies and a yearlong team project, while the environmental engineering program teaches students to build structures and facilities to manage pollution and limit harmful impacts on the planet.

Graduate degrees are available in areas such as nuclear engineering, computer science and operations research. The nuclear engineering master's program is a 15-month program offered as a non-thesis, on-campus option or a distance-learning option. The computer science master's program is available with an online track and covers algorithms, software engineering, artificial intelligence and networking. The operations research PhD program teaches students to use mathematical modeling and analysis to find solutions to human decision-making problems.
