Nursing RN Programs in the California Bay Area with School Info

Nursing students who complete an associate's degree, bachelor's degree or diploma program in nursing and then pass the national licensing examination become registered nurses, or RNs. San Francisco State University and California State University - East Bay are two of the largest schools to offer RN programs in the California Bay Area.

San Francisco State University's RN Programs

San Francisco State University is a 4-year, public school situated in the urban setting of San Francisco. The school offers bachelor's and master's degree programs to more than 30,000 students each year. It offers a nursing degree program for aspiring RNs within its School of Nursing, as well as a graduate program for current RNs looking to advance their education.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The most basic nursing program offered at San Francisco State University is a bachelor's degree program in nursing. The program is available both as a means to prepare students for the nursing field and to provide current registered nurses with a bachelor's degree. Those students who are already RNs receive advanced placement into the program. Students enrolled in the program must complete courses in nursing theory, geriatric nursing, maternity nursing, pediatric nursing, pharmacology, health assessment and more.

Master of Science in Nursing

San Francisco State University also offers a graduate degree program in nursing for RNs who are interested in furthering their education. They are required to complete courses such as health care policy and nursing issues, advanced nursing role development, ethics in advanced nursing and nursing field study. They can choose a concentration on which to focus, such as community and public health nursing, nursing administration or clinical nurse specialist.

California State University - East Bay RN Programs

California State University - East Bay is another public school to offer RN programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. The school is located about 22 miles outside of downtown San Francisco in Hayward, CA, and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 14,000 students each year. It houses degree programs for aspiring and current RNs within its Department of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

California State University - East Bay offers a BSN with both a pre-licensure option and an advanced placement option for current registered nurses. The program is accredited by the State of California Board of Registered Nursing. It prepares unlicensed graduates to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and become registered nurses. It also provides current RNs with the credits and education necessary to advance to master's degree programs and advanced positions within the nursing field.

RN Residency Program

This school also provides a 12-week RN residency program to help increase the employability of current registered nurses. The program provides RNs with advanced training in clinical competency, management skills and critical thinking skills. It includes 264 hours of clinical practicum hours to be completed at several different hospitals and within several different medical departments. The program is open to students who have recently graduated from a nursing degree program or RNs who are currently looking for work.
