Nursing Schools in Brooklyn with Program Information
There are a variety of schools in Brooklyn that offer nursing programs. Read an overview of program requirements for three schools within one mile of downtown Brooklyn to find out which school is right for you.
Brooklyn Nursing Programs
Aspiring nurses in the Brooklyn area have plenty of public and private schools to choose from. Read about three of these schools, all of which are less than five minutes from downtown. Check out the table near the end of the article for information on school types, enrollment numbers, tuition rates and more. Also included is a short section discussing two other nearby school options.
- ASA College, which is located directly in downtown Brooklyn, offers a 2-year nursing associate degree program.
- Located 0.2 miles from downtown Brooklyn at the MetroTech Center, CUNY New York City College of Technology offers both an associate's and bachelor's program in nursing.
- Long Island University-Brooklyn Campus, which is 0.4 miles from downtown Brooklyn, offers a bachelor's degree program in nursing, as well as a nurse practitioner master's degree program in three areas of specialty (adult, family and geriatric).
ASA College was formed in 1985 and is authorized by the New York State Board of Regents to offer associate's degree programs. The college also has a campus in Manhattan that's located about five miles away from the Brooklyn campus.
Associate of Applied Science in Nursing
Students at ASA College can prepare for entry-level positions in nursing or further study at the bachelor's level by completing a 2-year nursing degree program. The program consists of 68 credits, including 40 credits of core nursing classes. Students who successfully complete this degree program are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN).
CUNY New York City College of Technology
CUNY New York City College of Technology, often referred to as City Tech, is the largest public college of technology in the state of New York. Students at this institution can earn an associate's or bachelor's degree in nursing to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for a career as a registered nurse. The nursing programs offered are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), as well as the New York State Education Department.
Associate of Applied Science in Nursing
Students in this program are required to complete 14 credit hours of introductory coursework for one semester prior to taking clinical nursing courses. During this semester, students must pass the Kaplan Nursing Admissions Exam. Those admitted to the nursing phase of the program must complete a physical exam and submit proof of CPR certification and liability insurance prior to starting clinical training. To successfully complete the clinical portion of the curriculum, students must achieve a grade of satisfactory.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
This degree program is designed for practicing registered nurses (RNs) who are licensed in the state of New York. Students entering the program with a 2-year degree can transfer up to 60 credits towards the bachelor's program. Those with a nursing diploma and no college credits can gain admission by taking the Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exams II RN to BS administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN.) Students admitted to the program will complete courses in areas such as community health nursing, nutrition, nurse case management and pathophysiology.
Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus
The Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University was established in 1926 and offers more than 200 academic programs. Its School of Nursing's programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Nursing & RN-B.S. in Nursing Connection Program
Students at this university have several schedule options to complete courses for the B.S. in Nursing program. The program is offered as a part-time day, part-time evening and weekend, full-time day and full-time accelerated 15-month track for students who have a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field. Students complete a pre-professional phase that includes courses such as anatomy and physiology, chemistry and microbiology. Afterwards, students complete a professional phase on topics such as behavioral health nursing, medication administration, pathophysiology and pharmacology. The nursing connection program is designed for registered nurses wanting to earn a bachelor's degree. Students enrolled in this program will complete coursework in a traditional classroom format and online. For both of these degree programs, students must maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.5 and earn a grade of C or better in all nursing courses.
Master of Science in Adult Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner & Geriatric Nurse Practitioner
All of these degree programs are available in a blended format with up to half of the curriculum offered online and the other half in a classroom setting. Students wanting to enroll in any of these programs must have a bachelor's degree in nursing. For the adult nurse practitioner program, students will complete 495 hours of clinical training and 600 hours of classroom study. The family nurse practitioner program involves more training time with 555 clinical hours and 900 classroom hours. Students enrolled in the geriatric nurse practitioner program will spend 525 hours in clinical training and 600 hours in the classroom.

Other School Options
Located about one mile from downtown Brooklyn, St. Joseph's University-New York offers a bachelor's program in nursing. The program is geared towards students who've completed a diploma or 2-year nursing program and has an active RN license with the state of New York. Another option is St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, located approximately one mile from Brooklyn's downtown area. Students attending this school can complete a bachelor's and master's program in nursing.
