Nursing Program at Houston Community College

To be accepted into this program, prospective students must first complete prerequisite courses and pass an entrance exam. Before beginning the classes, students must have CPR certification, meet the program's health requirements and pass background checks and drug screenings.

Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

Students who earn this degree are qualified to take the National Council of Licensure Exam (NCLEX) for registered nurses (RN's). An advanced placement route is available for those who already have their LVN certification. Students must earn at least a C in all classes to successfully complete the program. The entire program must be completed within 4 years. The curriculum includes studies in pharmacology, psychology, human growth, pediatrics, microbiology and family nursing.

Nursing Programs at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston

This school's Bachelor's and Master's degree programs offer a variety of formats and focuses for nursing students. The Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree program is geared towards students who wish to remain in the clinical field, while the Doctor of Philosophy program was designed for those who wish to pursue advanced nursing research.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

To be accepted into the program, students must have at least a 2.75 GPA in their 60 hours of pre-nursing studies with a 3.0 in science classes. Once accepted, students must submit proof that they meet the program's health and safety standards, CPR certification and immigration status clearance. This program offers 3 format options.

Students who enter the program as RNs can take part in the RN-BSN program which awards up to 29 credits for previous work and can be completed in 3 semesters. An accelerated BSN program allows students to earn their BSN in 4 semesters of full-time study. Some students may be placed in the Pacesetter Program which runs for 16 months and places students in a professional nursing atmosphere for the last 16 weeks of study.

Master of Science in Nursing

Admission to the program varies slightly depending on the area of concentration chosen, but all students must have at least a BSN, 3 academic or professional references, at least 1 year of work experience and a Texas nursing license. Students in the MSN program can choose from 6 clinical concentrations, including nursing education, nurse anesthesia and family practice nurse. The program was designed to prepare nurses for leadership roles, and those who successfully complete the program qualify for doctoral studies.

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Program admission requirements include an MSN with a concentration in the same program focus, a 3.0 GPA, 3 letters of reference, at least 1 year of professional experience and an essay outlining the prospective student's career goals and practice interests. Once accepted, students will also need to meet the school's health, safety and immigration status standards.

This program was created for nurses who want to apply advanced studies towards a practice-based career. The schedule is flexible and students can earn this degree in 5 semesters of full-time study or 8 semesters of part-time study. Courses are presented in blocks of intense study. Areas of concentration are offered for nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthesia and nurse executive.

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Students who wish to pursue careers as scientists will find this program prepares them for leadership positions in nursing research. This 66-hour program is offered in full-time and part-time study options and culminates in doctoral dissertation. Admission requirements are similar to those for the DNP program. This program prefers students have nursing specialization credentials but they aren't a requirement.

Nursing Program at San Jacinto Community College

Associate Degree Nursing (RN)

To be admitted to this program, prospective students must complete a series of prerequisite courses in physiology and anatomy, microbiology and pathology, algebra and communications. Students will also need to pass a drug screening during the admissions process. This degree is also offered as a transition program for licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) or paramedics and can be completed in 4 semesters of full-time study. Paramedics and LVNs entering the program must complete a series of prerequisite courses which differ slightly depending on which profession the student was engaged in at the beginning of the program.

In order to earn this degree, students must have at least a C grade in all nursing courses, and the entire program can be completed in 5 semesters of full-time study, including 1 summer session. Courses include studies in nursing practice foundations, adult health, pharmacology, pediatrics, family nursing, mental health nursing and nursing leadership.

Houston Baptist University, a private, not-for-profit school that's about 18 minutes from downtown, offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Lee College students in Baytown, about 27 miles from Houston, can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing.
