Cosmetic Laser Programs in New York

In the state of New York, non-ablative radio-frequency and laser procedures are deemed medical procedures and not within the range of practice of licensed cosmetologists and estheticians; however, licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are allowed to perform laser hair removal. These licensed professionals who offer their clients laser hair removal procedures must display a disclaimer to the effect that the Department of State of the state of New York does not regulate this practice.

Students interested in cosmetic laser training can find four private for-profit (non-degree granting, proprietary) schools in New York. These schools are registered or licensed by the Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision of New York State. In addition to laser training, these schools offer training to prepare students for state licensure as cosmetologists and/or estheticians. Some schools include laser training within the licensure preparation program or offer it as an advanced separate course. Other schools offer training options in cosmetic laser techniques to licensed professionals. Advanced laser medical procedures training is offered in medical schools as part of dermatology residency programs for medical doctors. The five medical residency programs listed below offer residents a salary or stipend.
