Office Clerk Training Programs and Courses
Office clerks are responsible for executing a wide range of administrative tasks associated with the daily functions of an office. Clerks may enter data, answer phones, make photocopies and file records.
Training Requirements and Recommendations
Although not required for most positions, many office clerks choose to complete an associate's degree in a related field. Many companies are willing to provide on-the-job training to candidates with a high school diploma or its equivalent. Office clerks should be detail-oriented and good communicators.
Formal Education
Many students pursue an associate's degree in an office administration field. These programs offer students the chance to learn basic office skills and master advanced skills as well. The curricula for these programs emphasize the acquisition of strong computer skills, including word processing and software applications. Some certificate programs may also be available.
Office Assistant Certificate
Students who do not have the time or resources to commit to a full-time degree program may be interested in an office assistant certificate program. Certificate programs can often be completed online and allow students to work at their own pace. Students learn a variety of basic office skills, such as introductory keyboarding, human relations and business communication. General education courses are not usually required as part of an office assistant certificate program. Most certificate programs can be completed in less than a year.
Associate of Applied Science in Office Management
The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Office Management is a 2-year, undergraduate degree program that is designed to prepare students for immediate entry into an office-based, administrative position. Students gain practical office skills and study a variety of topics, including information processing, office computations and records management. Some general education courses are usually required, such as college composition and economics.
Job Experience
Much of office clerks' experience is gained through on-the-job training after a position is secured. Clerks may work closely with more experienced office staff in order to learn practical day-to-day office skills specific to the organization. Office clerks new to the field may execute basic office tasks, such as photocopying or mailings. More experienced clerks may be responsible for creating Excel spreadsheets or making travel arrangements for executives or clients with a travel agency.
Additional Professional Development
Office clerks may choose to enroll in classes that advance computer skills. Courses are often available online or at local colleges that teach computer programs, such as Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Word. With experience, office clerks may move into higher level positions, such as office manager or administrative supervisor.
