Oklahoma High School Diploma Information and Requirements
Each state has its own requirements for graduating from high school. While many of these states' requirements are similar, the number of units required may differ. This article details what is required of students who wish to graduate high school in Oklahoma.
What Are The Requirements for Graduating From High School in Oklahoma?
To graduate from high school in Oklahoma, students need to complete coursework in language arts, science, math, social studies and arts; however, as explained on the Hennessey Public Schools' website (www.hps.k12.ok.us), requirements can change based on the school district. As reported on the site's Oklahoma Requirements for High School Graduation, in some locations in Oklahoma, more than the state-mandated minimum of 23 credits may be required for graduation. Students should find out what's required by their specific school district.
Required Subject Areas
Four years of language arts study is required. These courses may include topics in grammar, composition, American literature, English literature, world literature and other English courses.
Students must complete at least three years of science classes. The subjects studied may include chemistry, biology, physics, earth science, physical science, technology and zoology. Within these subjects, students may be required to take both an introductory and advanced course, as is the case with chemistry and biology.
Students must have completed three years of math in order to graduate from high school in Oklahoma. Students can take math classes in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, computer science and finance. In addition to these subjects, students in the eleventh and twelfth grade are required to take courses that involve a technology center where they will work with computers.
Within three years of social studies, students are required to study United States history, United States government, world history, geography, economics and anthropology.
Two units are required in order to earn an Oklahoma high school diploma. Students must take complete in visual arts or general music. Depending on their school's offerings, students may take classes in painting, drawing, sculpture or learn how to play a musical instrument.
