School Ranking Overview

Students looking for online degree programs at Oklahoma universities and 4-year schools can find them at many public and private institutions. Degrees may be earned at many levels, including associate's, bachelor's and advanced degree options. To help point you in the right direction, this article will compare the four largest of these schools and rank them in the categories listed below:

Program Variety

Even though all programs might not be available online, it may be beneficial to know which schools offer the most programs in general. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) reports that the following three schools of the four being compared each have programs in approximately 100-140 fields of study and offer a wide range of online courses and programs.

1. Oklahoma State University - Main Campus

Located in Stillwater, which is situated in northern central Oklahoma, this university offers the most programs, overall, of the four comparison schools, with 141 offerings. Through this school, online students can choose from 16 graduate degrees and certificates in areas such as agriculture, business, engineering and nutritional science. Undergraduates can also find course options online through this university.

2. University of Oklahoma - Norman Campus

This school is centrally located in Norman and offers 132 programs, in general, which indicates the second most program variety of the four schools. Undergraduate online programs are offered in areas such as liberal arts and administrative leadership, while graduate programs are available in fields like human relations and organizational leadership. In addition, this university offers online classes from over 20 departments, including Chinese, mathematics and economics.

3. University of Central Oklahoma

Ranking in third place of the four schools with 96 programs available, overall, is this school centrally situated in Edmond. Online courses are offered in a variety of areas, such as business, health, personal enrichment, public & environmental safety and technology. Online students can pursue over 100 programs through this university.

Net Price

Average net price is determined by subtracting institutional and governmental financial aid awards from a school's total cost of attendance. As of 2012-2013, the following three schools of the four had the lowest average net prices reported by NCES.

1. Northeastern State University

This university is located in Tahlequah and offers the most affordable option for online students among the four schools. The average net price revealed by NCES was $6,418 per year.

2. University of Central Oklahoma

Ranking second in this category among the four schools compared, this school's average net price was $10,851.

3. Oklahoma State University - Main Campus

Charging an average net price of $14,415, this school ranked third for affordability. As with the previous two schools, the cost of attending college may often be softened for those who qualify by applying for financial aid.

Graduation Rate

The following overall graduation rates published by NCES show how many students who started working toward a bachelor's degree in 2007 finished within six years, or 150% of the normal time. In some cases, graduation rates may indicate student satisfaction.

1. University of Oklahoma - Norman Campus

This school had the highest graduation rate of 66% among the four sample universities. In addition, NCES said that 84% of the full-time first-time students who entered their bachelor's degree programs in 2012 returned in 2013 to continue their studies.

2. Oklahoma State University - Main Campus

Coming in second in this category, this school had a graduation rate of 60%. Additionally, in the fall of 2013, 79% of the first-time full-time students who had begun programs the previous year returned to this school to continue working toward their bachelor's degrees, said NCES.

3. University of Central Oklahoma

A graduation rate of 36% earned this university third place in the category. NCES also pointed out that 65% of the full-time first-time bachelor's degree students who started in 2012 continued the following year.

Student-to-Faculty Ratio

As a way to give students an idea of how much one-on-one time they can expect with instructional faculty, checking out the student-to-faculty ratio can be an indicator. The following three schools among the four comparison institutions had the lowest ratios, based on NCES statistics.

1. University of Oklahoma - Norman Campus

Tying for first place with the following school and having a student-to-faculty ratio of 18:1, this school has the larger student population of the two. In the fall of 2013, the instructional faculty was composed of 1,156 full-time and 252 part-time members. There were also 909 instructional graduate assistants available at that time to aid the teachers.

1. Northeastern State University

Also with a ratio of 18:1, this smaller school had a 2013 instructional faculty consisting of 328 full-time and 226 part-time teachers. In addition, 23 instructional graduate assistants were employed at that same time.

2. Oklahoma State University - Main Campus

Of the four comparison schools, this university ranked next with a student-to-faculty ratio of 20:1. In the fall of 2013, a group of 1,106 instructional graduate assistants lent a hand to the 1,106 full-time and 190 part-time instructional faculty.
