Program Information

Like on-campus programs, distance learning Spanish bachelor's programs are designed to give students proficiency in reading, writing and speaking the language. Understanding the histories, cultures and arts of Spain and Latin American countries are often part of the curriculum as well. Some programs are geared towards training future Spanish teachers, while others provide a broad curriculum that could be applicable to careers in journalism, government, law enforcement, communications or any field where second-language proficiency may be beneficial. Programs typically include a capstone project or student teaching and study abroad opportunities are available.

Several four-year universities and colleges now offer fully-online bachelor's programs in Spanish. These programs usually take about four years of study if students attend full-time, but could take less time if they have previously-earned college credits considered transferable. Some bachelor's-level programs may require or encourage prospective students to have some level of proficiency in the Spanish language.

Curriculum Requirements

Although the delivery method is different, online programs in Spanish typically require the same coursework as those offered on campus. Students not only build their linguistic and translation skills in the language but also study topics such as Spanish literature, Mexican-American culture, multiculturalism and contemporary issues confronting Latin American peoples. Some programs require students to complete a capstone course or seminar which often includes a comprehensive project. Other courses a Spanish major might contain include:

  • Introductory, intermediate and advanced Spanish
  • Spanish civilization
  • Advanced grammar and composition
  • Spanish film studies
  • Diversity issues

Online Learning

Courses in Spanish make use of online e-learning systems, such as Blackboard. Instructors are able to use the recording option to create audio assignments to test students' comprehension and speaking skills. Students complete the assignment by submitting an audio file. Exams may be completed in the same manner. Some programs make use of video conferencing technology, which allows for live interaction and Spanish-speaking practice. In such cases, students likely need to purchase Web cameras, headphones and/or microphones in order to participate.

On-Site Requirements

Though Spanish bachelor's programs can be completed totally online, some schools offer distance learners the option to participate in a study abroad experience in a Spanish-speaking country. This is considered a valuable experience as it allows students to immerse themselves in the language and culture. For those programs focused on Spanish teacher education, supervised student teaching experiences may be required.
