Free Online Chemistry Classes with Course Descriptions
Paid and free online chemistry classes are offered by a variety of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Carnegie Mellon University are two such schools.
Where Can I Find Free Online Chemistry Classes?
Many schools offer free online chemistry courses, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (www.ocw.mit.edu) and Carnegie Mellon University (www.oli.web.cmu.edu). There are many other chemistry classes offered online, though they are generally worth credits and cost the student money. Some of the schools offering paid, online chemistry courses are Oregon State University, South Carolina University and University of Texas, among others.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) offers free online chemistry classes through their OpenCourseWare (OCW) program. OCW is composed of web-based free publications of MIT coursework of almost all the undergraduate and graduate programs. None of the coursework through MIT's OCW confers any credits, nor can any degree or certificate be earned. Students interested in free online chemistry courses at MIT don't need to register or enroll and may view coursework at any time. Some of the free online chemistry classes offered at MIT include:
Principles of Chemical Science Class
An introduction to the chemistry of inorganic, organic and biological molecules is presented in this course, with an emphasis on molecular and atomic structures, chemical kinetics, thermodynamics and acid-base equilibrium. This free online chemistry class offers video lectures, class notes and exams with answers.
Principles of Inorganic Chemistry Class
The introductory inorganic chemistry class provides instruction in the chemical applications of inorganic chemical compounds. Students are introduced to electronic structures and the magnetic properties of various metal compounds. Introduction to the use of spectroscopy as an analytic tool is also examined.
Organic Chemistry Class
This introductory organic chemistry course emphasizes basic principles and a foundational understanding of the reactivity and structures associated with organic molecules.
Biological Chemistry Class
This course provides a foundational understanding in the use of computer programs to view 3-D chemical and biological structures. Software capable of opening .pdb and .spt files is needed to view some course material. Students examine experimental methods and coordinated regulation of various chemical processes and how these fit with chemistry, cellular contexts and biological processes.
Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon University offers the Open Learning Initiative (OLI), free coursework that is viewable online and includes tutoring systems, virtual labs and simulations. The initiative is intended for students to provide feedback about the course for the school and teacher's evaluation, development and improvement.
Scientists and faculty develop the coursework, while software engineers help in providing presentable, easy to learn environments online. Two different free online chemistry classes offered at Carnegie Mellon include,:
Stoichiometry Class
The stoichiometry introductory class introduces students to how stoichiometric measurements and calculations are used and how to apply these skills to designing and interpreting lab experiments. Class instruction is provided through videos showing stoichiometry calculations, homework assignments and virtual lab experiments and activities. Students receive an introduction to empirical formulas, limiting reagents, mixture reactions and dimensional analysis.
Chemical Equilibrium and Acid-Base Chemistry Class
Students are introduced to the concepts of chemical equilibrium and how it applies to solubility and acid-based chemistry. This course has been extensively researched and took two years to compose. While this subject is purportedly very difficult to learn and to teach, the OLI program seeks to make it more accessible and easier to present and learn through its research. Other subjects of study in this chemistry class include chemical reactions in acid-based chemistry, buffer chemistry and capacities, and molecular diagrams.
