Ultrasound Programs in Oregon

Students who want to gain the knowledge and skills to perform ultrasound procedures can pursue degree programs in sonography and echocardiography. However, the state of Oregon has limited options when it comes to ultrasound education and training, and only one school in the state offers sonography and echocardiography programs.

As of January 1, 2014, sonographers will need to be licensed to work in the state of Oregon and must renew their licenses every two years. In order to gain licensure, sonographers must be credentialed through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). These credentials are obtained by passing an exam.

Oregon Institute of Technology

The Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls offers bachelor's degrees in diagnostic medical sonography (DMS) and echocardiography. The DMS program features courses in cross-sectional anatomy, patient care, sonography instrumentation, abdominal sonography, pelvic sonography, sonography pathology and pediatric sonography. The DMS program qualifies graduates to sit for the ARDMS exam. The echocardiography program requires that students complete courses in sonography physics, sonography instrumentation, cardiovascular physiology, echocardiography, invasive cardiology and cardiographic methods. The senior years of both programs consist of four, full-time externships in the respective fields.

Students who have already earned an allied health associate's degree, are certified in their respective fields and are working in the field can pursue a degree completion B.S. in diagnostic medical sonography or echocardiography. These 2-year programs can be taken entirely online and feature upper division coursework.
