Painting Courses in CT

In Connecticut, there are a variety of school options for those interested in painting classes. Some schools have specialized programs dedicated to painting, while others offer just a few advanced courses. Ten of the largest public and private not-for-profit schools are profiled below.

Central Connecticut State University

New Britain's Central Connecticut State University offers a 60-credit bachelor's degree program in art. Students enrolled in this program will take a variety of painting courses as part of the core and elective curriculum. The painting classes cover topics on watercolors, composition, landscapes and murals. Students must turn in a satisfactory portfolio before they can complete advanced studio coursework. A capstone course is also required.

Connecticut College

New London's Connecticut College offers a bachelor's degree in studio art. Students learn about painting, drawing and design. Painting courses include lessons on color, composition and space. The program also teaches students about modern and traditional painting methods.

Eastern Connecticut State University

Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) in Willimantic offers a bachelor's degree in visual arts with a concentration in painting and drawing. This concentration teaches students about composition and color. Other studio classes cover landscape, watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. ECSU also has a visual arts club that organizes field trips and guest lectures for students.

Fairfield University

This university in Fairfield offers a bachelor's degree in studio art. The program is divided into foundational, advanced and capstone art courses. The foundational art courses teach students about media, composition and conceptualization. The painting courses deal with various oil painting techniques in color, texture and composition. The university also offers watercolor classes and advanced painting courses. Students are required to take seminars in their junior and senior years.

Sacred Heart University

Fairfield's Sacred Heart University provides a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design program that has concentrations in illustration and studio art. Students take 51 credits in their desired concentration to fulfill degree requirements. Both concentrations offer introductory and advanced courses in painting. The program focuses on watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. Sacred Heart University's art club lets students attend field trips and teach young children about art.

University of Connecticut

The University of Connecticut in Storrs has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art program with a concentration in painting. Students will take studio courses in basic, intermediary and advanced painting techniques. Applicants to the BFA program must turn in a portfolio for review. BFA students complete a senior project and showcase their work in a senior art show. The university also offers a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art program that deals with a range of media like drawing and painting. MFA students must present an exhibition, give a public talk, complete a thesis paper and pass an oral exam.

University of Hartford

The University of Hartford in West Hartford has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting program. In the painting concentration, students study acrylic, oil and watercolor painting. As students progress through the program, they explore composition, figure painting and still life. Additionally, the school offers prominent artist-led workshops and lectures.

Wesleyan University

Wesleyan University is in Middletown, and the school offers a bachelor's degree program in art studio. Students need to take prerequisites in drawing and art history before they are officially admitted into the program. In the introductory painting class, students learn about color and composition in oil painting. The advanced painting class helps students develop their own personal style and painting skills. A Sumi-e painting course teaches students about Japanese calligraphy-style art. Students must complete senior thesis classes and present a senior exhibition.

Western Connecticut State University

This Danbury university offers an art bachelor's degree program with options in studio art and illustration. Studio art students can choose an emphasis in painting. Both art options require introductory courses in painting that focus on collage, tempera, watercolor and oil painting. Advanced painting courses cover topics in landscapes and figure painting. All students must turn in a portfolio in their sophomore year, in order to be admitted into their concentration classes. Art students are required to complete a senior exhibition. Students can participate in field trips to museums and galleries in New York City.

Yale University

Yale University in New Haven offers an art bachelor's degree program with a concentration in painting and printmaking. Only students who have satisfactorily completed art prerequisites and passed a sophomore review are accepted into the program. The introductory painting courses teach students the basics of color, space and materials. Yale also has a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking program where experimentation and personalization of art is encouraged. MFA students can take advantage of resources like personal studios or a printmaking workshop.
