Essential Information

Paramedics are emergency medical technicians (EMTs) who have completed the highest level of training. Students in Maine may choose to complete an educational program leading to a certificate or an associate's degree. The curriculum within a school is usually very similar, although associate's degrees include general education requirements. All paramedic programs include practicum requirements such as an internship or clinical rotations.

Some paramedic programs have entry-level curriculum - they provide EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic coursework and licensure preparation. Other programs may only be available to students who already possess EMT-Basic and EMT-Intermediate licensure. Particular admission requirements are explained below.

Career Requirements

All paramedics must be licensed for work. In order to be licensed in the state of Maine, students need to pass an approved paramedic program, exams and background checks. Maine requires aspiring paramedics to pass National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exams.
