- Located about 28 miles from central Atlanta in Lawrenceville, GA, Gwinnett Technical College offers a patient care assistant certificate and a healthcare assistant certificate with a concentration in patient care assisting.
- The largest school of the three, West Georgia Technical College is a two-year school located in Waco roughly 49 miles from downtown Atlanta. The school offers a healthcare assistant certificate program that has courses similar to what one would find in a patient care technician program.
Atlanta Technical College
Atlanta Technical College (ATC) offers certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in various health-related fields. ATC offers several healthcare concentrations, including patient care assisting technician, health care assisting, medical assisting, hemodialysis patient care specialist, medical billing and nursing.
Patient Care Assisting Technical Certificate of Credit
Through lectures, lab studies and clinical experiences, students are exposed to the fundamental duties of patient care technicians. This 23-credit program teaches students a wide range of patient care duties, such as obtaining lab specimens, taking vital signs, charting and documenting patient files and assisting patients with daily tasks. An introductory healthcare course teaches students about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), infection prevention, vital signs and first aid. Other courses include anatomy and physiology, diet and nutrition, interpersonal relations and medical terminology.
Students also complete a nurse aide fundamentals course that prepares them to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) competency exam. Once a student passes this exam, his or her name can be added to State of Georgia Nurse Aide Registry. High school graduates at least 16 years of age may apply to this program; applicants must provide transcripts and have adequate assessment scores in reading, math and English.
Hemodialysis Patient Care Specialist Technical Certificate of Credit
This program is designed for students who wish to assist patients suffering from renal failure or kidney malfunction. The curriculum focuses on defining the therapy of hemodialysis and effectively performing it in an outpatient environment. The 17-credit program includes classes on basic computing functions, such as creating spreadsheets and navigating databases. Classroom work and hands-on application are included in this program.
Gwinnett Technical College
Gwinnett Technical College (GTC) offers career-oriented programs, adult education and continuing education. The nursing science division at GTC offers a patient care assistant program. Additionally, the health science division has a healthcare assistant program that offers the following areas of concentration: allied health, medical unit secretary, patient care assistant and occupational.
Patient Care Assistant Technical Certificate
This 23-credit program takes at least two semesters to complete. The curriculum includes classroom assignments, practical experiences and clinical education. Students learn to provide patient care, including taking vital signs and collecting lab specimens, through courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, diet and nutrition and nurse aide fundamentals. Courses are available in the day, evening and online.
Individuals who complete this program can take the NNAAP exam to have their names added to the nurse aide registry. Applicants must have adequate placement scores in reading, writing and math. Prior to starting clinical experiences, students must undergo criminal background checks and drug screenings.
Healthcare Assistant Certificate
The curriculum includes general core courses, such as English, math and basic psychology, as well as technical courses in introduction to healthcare, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and computers. The patient care assisting concentration includes an interpersonal relations and professional development course, diet and nutrition therapy course and nurse aide fundamentals course. Upon completion of this program, students can take the NNAAP exam.
West Georgia Technical College
West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) awards certificates, diplomas and associate degrees in a spectrum of studies, including medical assisting, paramedic technology, dental assisting and healthcare assisting. The college serves seven counties and is a member of the Technical College System of Georgia.
Healthcare Assistant Certificate
This program requires the completion of at least 36 credits and includes basic skills courses, such as English, math and basic psychology. The curriculum also includes medical courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diet and nutrition, venipuncture, healthcare and nurse aide fundamentals. The nurse aide fundamentals course may qualify a student to take the nurse aide certification exam. Students also take an emergency medical responder course, which includes American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) certification and eligibility for certification as an emergency medical responder. Additionally, students will complete at least 15 contact hours of clinical education to obtain hands-on experience.
