7-Year Bachelor of Science (B.S.)/Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Program

UCSD offers an accelerated B.S./Pharm.D. program that can be completed in 7 years. Before applying to the program, students should complete courses in general chemistry, calculus, physics, organic chemistry and biology, along with a 1-unit undergraduate pharmacology seminar. Only undergraduate freshmen are eligible to apply for the program and they must declare a major in pharmacological chemistry. After the student has completed the first two years as a pharmacological chemistry major in the 7-year program, the student can apply for acceptance to the Pharm.D. program.

Doctor of Pharmacy

Courses for the Pharm.D. degree program include increasingly complex courses in chemistry, pharmacy practice and ethics, anatomy, biochemistry, human biology, physiology, hematology, microbiology/immunology, neurology, therapeutics and pharmaceutics. Students attend 3 quarters per year and 1 summer quarter obtaining practical experience. The fourth-year curriculum is devoted to advanced pharmacy practice experiences, which are clinical rotations at local university-affiliated teaching centers.

Doctor of Pharmacy/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

The combined Pharm.D. and Ph.D. program prepares graduates for pharmaceutical, governmental and academia roles. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct original research in the pharmaceutical sciences in hopes of applying the findings to clinical observations. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic practices and the drug development process.

The program is offered jointly between the pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences school and various Ph.D. programs offered at the University of California, San Diego. After completing the 3-year Pharm.D. curriculum, students are required to complete a Ph.D. thesis project. After Ph.D. requirements are met, students complete the advanced pharmacy practice experiences offered during the final year of the Pharm.D. program. The entire process takes approximately eight years to complete.
