Individuals who work as pharmacy technicians in Maryland are required to register with the State of Maryland Board of Pharmacy. Registrants must pass a criminal background check and satisfy training or certification requirements or be able to show proof of registration in another state that has similar requirements. The initial registration expires after 1 year, and continuing education hours must be completed for registration renewal. Cumberland's Allegany College of Maryland provides a pharmacy technician program that can be completed in 1 semester. This program provides instruction on state and national laws, medical ethics, patient communication, the metric system and pharmacology. Completion of a 180-hour internship is required, and students also receive training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid. A certificate is awarded upon program completion.

College of Southern Maryland

The College of Southern Maryland in La Plata provides a 17-credit certificate program that prepares students for employment as pharmacy technicians. The curriculum covers human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacy business skills and pharmacology. This 3-semester program requires students to complete a practicum during the last semester. Students participate in seminars and receive hands-on experience in various settings during this practicum.

Hagerstown Community College

Students at Hagerstown Community College in Hagerstown can begin their pharmacy training in an 8-credit Pharmacy Technician Letter of Recognition program that offers 3 courses: introduction to pharmacy technology, pharmaceutical calculation and pharmacy applications.
