PhD Programs in Georgia: University and Program Information
Universities throughout Georgia offer academic and professional doctoral degree programs in fields that range from the natural sciences to education. The state's largest schools offering Ph.D. programs include the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia State University in Atlanta and Kennesaw State University.
Georgia's Largest Schools with Ph.D. Programs
University of Georgia in Athens
Chartered in 1785, the University of Georgia (UGA) is the country's first state chartered university. The university prides itself on opening the nation's first small business development center in 1977 and, more recently, the world's first stand-alone ecology school in 2007. Other distinguishing characteristics of UGA include the Grady College of Journalism, which administers the prestigious Peabody Awards program and the designation of a Sea Grant University due to UGA's notable research and education in the marine sciences.
UGA also performs well in college rankings. It was ranked among the top 20 American public universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2011 and the top ten best value American public postsecondary institutions by Kiplinger's. Doctoral degree programs are available in many of the schools within this university, from agriculture to veterinary medicine.
Franklin College of Arts and Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences at UGA covers a range of core humanities and natural sciences disciplines. Departments and divisions that grant Ph.D.s include anthropology, music, English, philosophy, history, communication studies, statistics, psychology and the biological sciences.
Grady College of Journalism & Mass Communication
This renowned school of journalism offers one of the oldest mass communication programs in the country. Only one doctoral degree is conferred through the college of journalism, the Ph.D. in Mass Communication.
School of Public and International Affairs
The political science and international affairs departments both confer Ph.D. degrees in this school. Political science students may specialize in political theory, American politics or law. International affairs students may specialize in comparative politics or international relations.
School of Social Work
This UGA graduate school confers a Ph.D. in Social Work that prepares graduates for careers in academic, public or private sector research.
College of Public Health
The public health college offers two Ph.D. programs, as well as a Doctor of Public Health. The Ph.D. programs are in toxicology and health promotion.
College of Veterinary Medicine
The primary degree offered at the College of Veterinary Medicine is the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; however students who also wish to specialize in specific research areas can pursue a Ph.D. in pathology, physiology, parasitology, infectious disease or pharmacology.
College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences
Departments within this school that confer Ph.D. degrees include agricultural and applied economics, biological and agricultural engineering, food science and technology, animal and dairy science, poultry science, crop and soil sciences, entomology, horticulture and plant pathology.
Daniel B. Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources
The forestry and natural resources school offers one doctoral degree program. Students in the Ph.D. program often choose to focus on areas like forest biology, tourism and recreation, environmental systems or forest management.
Odum School of Ecology
Graduate students in the Odum School of Ecology can earn a Ph.D. in ecology, which offers a broad background in environmental science. The graduate program was ranked eighth in the nation by U.S. News & World Report' in 2011.
College of Family and Consumer Sciences
Several departments within the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences confer Ph.D. degrees, including foods and nutrition; child and family development; housing and consumer economics; and textiles, merchandising and interiors.
College of Education
The College of Education at UGA also offers Ph.D. degrees through several different departments, including counseling and human development services, communication sciences, special education, kinesiology, elementary education, mathematics education, leadership and social foundations.
Terry College of Business
Two Ph.D. degree programs are offered to graduate students at the UGA Terry College of Business. The Ph.D. in Economics and the Ph.D. in Business Administration both emphasize research and teaching skills.
