Prospective doctoral students looking to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in New York have a wealth of options. Both New York University and the University at Buffalo offer students numerous doctoral degree programs from which to choose.
New York University's Ph.D. Programs
New York University is located in New York City and was founded in 1831. Currently, NYU is the largest private university in the country and is comprised of 14 academic divisions in addition to several international and national branch campuses and research sites. The university typically confers approximately 400 doctoral degrees per year.
Ph.D. in Mathematics
Offered at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Ph.D. in Mathematics requires 72 credits. Students are required to take and pass a written comprehensive examination and an oral preliminary examination. The written examination tests knowledge of concepts in areas including linear algebra, complex variables and advanced calculus. The oral preliminary examination is typically administered after two years of study, covering partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations, complex variables and real variables. An oral dissertation is also required.
Ph.D. in Social Work
The Ph.D. in Social Work is offered at the Silver School of Social Work, and doctoral students can expect to earn 48 credits and pass a written comprehensive examination. Students are also required to participate in 20 hours of research assistance per week and submit a Comprehensive Integrative Paper counting toward the dissertation.
