Phlebotomy technicians collect and process blood and body fluids for testing. They usually work with clinical laboratory personnel and other medical staff in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings. While certification is not necessarily required for employment, some employers may prefer candidates who have earned certification after graduation from a college program. A background check and immunizations are often required to participate in clinical experiences. Atlanta Technical College
Located in Atlanta, this college offers a phlebotomy technician technical certificate. The 24-credit program includes coursework in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and venipuncture. The program also requires students to complete 225 hours of clinical practice, which provides students with real-world work experience in venipuncture, clinical policies and procedures, and medical ethics.
Athens Technical College
The phlebotomy technician technical certificate program at this Athens-based school requires 24 credit hours. Coursework includes English, computers, medical terminology, anatomy, and venipuncture. In addition, students will be required to complete a clinical component. Students are required to pass all courses with at least a C in order to graduate.
Central Georgia Technical College
Central Georgia Technical College's phlebotomy technician technical certificate program is at its Macon campus. This 24-credit program includes a clinical component, as well as coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, English, and venipuncture. Almost 81% of this program's graduates were employed upon graduating, as of 2011.
Darton State College
Albany's Darton State College offers a structured, two-part phlebotomy certificate program, consisting of classroom instruction and clinical training. After an introductory classroom course in phlebotomy, students perform clinical phlebotomy. The clinical component requires students to complete 200 hours of work in healthcare settings. They successfully perform at least 25 skin punctures and 100 venipunctures.
Georgia Northwestern Technical College
Georgia Northwestern Technical College, located in Rome, administers a phlebotomy technician certificate program. The program, which requires 24 credit hours to complete, includes coursework in anatomy, medical terminology, allied health sciences, computers, and venipuncture. A clinical component gives students the chance to gain real-world experience. Students will be required to purchase hospital scrubs for their clinicals and must also pass a CPR course.
Georgia Piedmont Technical College
Clarkston's Georgia Piedmont Technical College has a phlebotomy technician certificate program that includes both classroom and clinical requirements. Savannah Technical College
