Phlebotomy Classes in Michigan

Michigan has several schools that offer phlebotomy classes. The most common type of program in this field is the certificate program, which confers a Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Achievement upon completion. While certification is not required for employment, earning a certificate can help demonstrate knowledge in the field to prospective employers. Profiled below are nine public and not-for-profit schools offering phlebotomy programs in Michigan.

Davenport University

Davenport University, located in Grand Rapids, offers a diploma in phlebotomy through the College of Health Professions. This is a 36-credit program, which usually takes three semesters to complete if students follow Davenport's recommended schedule. Courses examine medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, CPR and first aid, basic composition, algebra, and applied technology. The program also includes laboratory and practicum components.

Glen Oaks Community College

Centreville's Glen Oaks Community College offers a phlebotomy technician certificate program. The 24-28 credit program includes an externship to help students gain hands-on experience in the field. Medical terminology, disease conditions, medical ethics, and anatomy and physiology are explored in this program. The program meets the American Society for Clinical Pathology's criteria for an acceptable program of study for students who plan to take the phlebotomy technician (PBT) exam.

Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College is located in Michigan's state capitol, Lansing. Prospective phlebotomists can earn a phlebotomy technician Certificate of Achievement. This six-credit program takes two semesters to complete. Students take a two-credit phlebotomy technician course in their first semester and a four-credit phlebotomy externship in their second semester. This combination provides students with both classroom education and practical experience. It should be noted that students are required to take their second semester externship no later than one year after completing their first semester coursework.

Mott Community College

In the Flint area, students interested in learning about phlebotomy can enroll in a course in Mott Community College's alternative training program offered by the school's Health Sciences Division. This single, two-credit course is designed for beginning phlebotomy students. The course covers topics such as practical skills in venipuncture, collection and preparation of specimens, and laboratory testing.

North Central Michigan College

North Central Michigan College is located in Petoskey, right at the tip of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. North Central Michigan offers a Certificate of Development for phlebotomy technicians. Upon completion of the certificate program, students can take the American Society for Clinical Pathology's PBT exam to earn their certification.

Oakland Community College

Located in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills, Oakland Community College offers a phlebotomy technician certificate. This 10-credit program includes coursework in laboratory procedures, phlebotomy, medical law and ethics, and medical terminology.
