Phlebotomy Schools in California

California requires that all phlebotomists be certified. To become certified, an individual with no phlebotomy experience must have a high school diploma or GED certificate, complete a training program that includes a minimum of 40 hours each of lectures and clinical experience and pass an exam.

The state's public health department has approved 130 phlebotomy training programs throughout the state. The ten largest public or private non-profit schools offering a state-approved phlebotomy program are discussed in this article. Each of these programs prepares graduates to earn state certification and work as a phlebotomist.

College of the Canyons

Located in Santa Clarita, this college enrolls approximately 14,000 students. It offers a phlebotomy certificate program that provides instruction in phlebotomy techniques, patient preparation and phlebotomy equipment. The program's curriculum also includes on-campus lab work and a clinical experience.

De Anza College

Located in Cupertino, this school enrolls about 24,000 students. It offers a Certificate of Achievement in Phlebotomy that takes a minimum of one year of study if attended on a part-time basis. Students in this program learn how to set up lab tests, process specimens and perform venipunctures. The program includes a clinical experience.

Lake Tahoe Community College

Situated in South Lake Tahoe, this college offers a 2-part phlebotomy training course. Students in this course learn how to identify and explain the structures and functions of veins, select veins for specimen withdrawals, collect specimens and properly dispose of specimen utensils after use. The program includes a clinical experience.

Long Beach City College

Situated in the same city as is included in its name, Long Beach, this college offers a 2-semester phlebotomy course that includes 2.5 units of study. During the first semester of study, students learn how to safely perform phlebotomy procedures. During the second semester, students complete a practicum at a local medical center.

Modesto Junior College

Modesto Junior College is located in Modesto and educates about 18,000 students. The college offers a phlebotomy certificate program designed to be completed in 3-6 months. The program includes 60 hours of classroom instruction and a 40-hour internship at a clinic.
