Programs at San Diego Mesa College
This school's phlebotomy and related programs provide students with training through in-class lectures and laboratory courses. Students who complete the medical assisting programs qualify to take the California Certified Medical Assistant certification exam and the American Registry of Medical Assistants' Registered Medical Assistant certification exam. Medical assisting students must also participate in directed clinical practice, which may require fingerprinting and a background check prior to placement.
Certificate of Performance in Phlebotomy
This program consists of 2 courses and a practicum that fulfills the 9.5-unit program requirement. Students will encounter topics in capillary puncture, medical terminology, infection control, the circulatory system, quality assurance, venipuncture and risk factors. The phlebotomy practicum provides students with enough clinical training to qualify and prepare them to take the American Medical Technologists' Registered Phlebotomy Technician certification exam. Program graduates can also apply for California's Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 designation.
Certificate of Achievement in Medical Assisting
This program requires students to complete 28 units. Courses cover topics in minor surgery, human anatomy, physiology, patient care, electrocardiogram application, administrative medical assisting and infection control. This program also features a course covering medical assisting phlebotomy.
Associate in Science in Medical Assisting
All of the courses required in the medical assisting certificate program are required in this program. The main difference is that this program requires students to complete general education courses. A total of 60 course units are needed to complete this program.
Programs at Southwestern College
In addition to in-class training, phlebotomy students will be required to participate in a laboratory course component and practicum for hands-on skills development. Before enrolling in the phlebotomy certificate program, students must pass prerequisite courses in medical terminology, pre-algebra, composition and college reading.
Certificate of Proficiency in Phlebotomy
In order to finish this program, students need to complete 5.5 course units. Common topics include specimen collection, venipuncture, anatomy, patient preparation, safety, isolation procedures and skin puncture. This program also provides the didactic content that is required for California phlebotomy certification.
