Phlebotomy Certificate Program Options in Virginia

Out of Virginia's 91 public and private not-for profit schools, 12 offer phlebotomy certificate programs. According the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employers tend to look for phlebotomy technicians who have a professional certification. The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) offers the Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification. Most of the programs discussed below help students prepare for national certification examinations.

Lord Fairfax Community College

Middletown is home to Lord Fairfax Community College. The 16-credit hour phlebotomy program features courses in human biology, computer applications, computer concepts and medical terminology. In addition to classroom-based phlebotomy training, the phlebotomy clinical requires students to work 100 hours in a medical environment under professional supervision.

Mountain Empire Community College

Found in Big Stone Gap, Mountain Empire Community College's phlebotomy certificate program has courses covering college composition, medical terminology, first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), healthcare ethics, computer concepts and college success skills. This program requires a minimum of 25 credits for graduation. Phlebotomy courses and clinical work consist of lectures and laboratory components.

Northern Virginia Community College

Annandale-based Northern Virginia Community College offers an 11-credit hour phlebotomy certificate program. Students encounter topics in laboratory terminology and procedures, collection tube use, legal and ethical issues, blood collection, isolation procedures, specimen handling and specimen processing. Clinical work and laboratory components provide hands-on skills development.

Rappahannock Community College

Rappahannock Community College is located in Glenns and has phlebotomy certificate program that can be finished in 16-17 credit hours. In addition to phlebotomy concepts, courses cover medical terminology, college composition and an approved elective topic. Before the end of the program, students complete a 4-credit hour clinical for professional experience.

Southside Virginia Community College

A phlebotomy certificate program can be found at Alberta-based Southside Virginia Community College. Along with a phlebotomy course and coordinated practice, students pass courses in college composition or communication processes, microcomputers, first aid and CPR. The program also features an orientation course and a psychology elective course.

Southwest Virginia Community College

A 25-credit hour phlebotomy certificate program that takes 2-semesters to complete is offered at Claypool Hill's Southwest Virginia Community College. Courses include college survival skills, medical terminology, human systems, practical writing and microcomputers. Phlebotomy training is provided through coordinated practice, project work and in-class education.

Thomas Nelson Community College

Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton has a 9-credit hour phlebotomy certificate program that consists of 2 courses and clinical experience. Students learn medical laboratory technology basics and phlebotomy concepts. In depth phlebotomy studies train students in quality assurance, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, infection control, inter-personal communication, specimen transportation and specimen collection.

Tidewater Community College

Located in Norfolk, Tidewater Community College has a phlebotomy certificate program consisting of 4 courses across 1 semester. Other than a phlebotomy course and clinical practicum, this program requires college composition and medical terminology courses. In the phlebotomy course, students are trained in collecting blood specimens, performing tests and clerical duties, interacting with patients and handling specimens.

Virginia Western Community College

A total of 15 students are accepted to the phlebotomy certificate program at Roanoke's Virginia Western Community College. Students learn how to extract and process blood samples, perform venipuncture, perform dermal puncture and interpret physician orders. This 16-credit hour program includes hands-on training through clinical work and a coordinated internship.

Wytheville Community College

Wytheville Community College, found in Wytheville, has a phlebotomy certificate program that takes 18 credit hours to finish.
