Essential Information

Utah does not have specific training, certification or licensure requirements for phlebotomists working within its borders. Despite this, there are a few technology and community colleges as well as one 4-year institution offering phlebotomy training in the state. Most programs award students an undergraduate certificate of completion. Applicants may need to meet minimum age and immunization requirements. Depending on the program, they may also need to be CPR certified and pass a drug screening. Most programs include a hands-on training portion. Phlebotomy programs are located throughout the state in Salt Lake City, Tooele, St. George and Kaysville, and more details of each program are offered below.


Davis Applied Technology College

Situated in Kaysville, Davis Applied Technology College offers a phlebotomy training course through its continuing education division. Graduates of this program are awarded a Recognition of Training Certificate. The program's curriculum includes instruction about collecting specimens and performing venipunctures, as well as a 40-hour externship.

Dixie State College of Utah

Located in St. George, this four-year school educates approximately 9,000 students a year. The School of Nursing and Allied Health offers a phlebotomy training program through an association with the Dixie Regional Medical Center. The one-semester phlebotomy program includes instruction in withdrawing blood samples using syringes, vacutainers, finger stick and butterfly instruments. The program provides hands-on training through an internship. Admission into the program requires students to meet specific health requirements, as well as possess a CPR certification.

Salt Lake Community College

Approximately 33,000 students are enrolled in programs within the Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City. The school offers a Certificate of Proficiency program that includes 285 hours of instruction in phlebotomy through the Division of Applied Technology. Courses examine concepts in medical assistant procedures, working in health care environments and job-seeking skills. Coursework also includes first aid and CPR training. The 28-credit program requires a background check and drug test prior to enrollment.

Tooele Applied Technology College

This public school located in Tooele offers a Certificate of Proficiency in Phlebotomy program that includes about 280 hours of instruction. Offered through the health care technologies division, the phlebotomy program educates students in law and ethics in the medical environment, vital signs, CPR, phlebotomy procedures, medical asepsis and medical office communication. Applications must be at least 16 and have a current TB test and immunizations.
