Minnesota has photography programs ranging from a 19-credit certificate to a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. Overviews of ten of the largest schools in the state that offer photography classes are provided below, along with a table that compares tuition and school info.
Anoka-Ramsey Community College
The curriculum offered by the Associate in Fine Arts program at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids includes courses in photography. Students complete 34 art credits and receive instruction through multiple levels of photography classes. They also have the opportunity to learn photo-editing software, such as Photoshop. In addition, a pinhole photography course is available.
Central Lakes College - Staples Campus
Central Lakes College offers an associate's program in photographic equipment and technical services, as well as a diploma and an associate's degree program in photographic imaging technology, at its campus in Staples. Both degree programs require students to complete 72 credits of coursework, while the diploma program includes 64 credits. All programs include courses in basic photography and processing, photo printing systems, digital darkroom, visual relationships and photo graphics. The photographic equipment and technical services program also offers industrial electronics courses and labs, while the photographic imaging program provides classes in outdoor photography, art direction and media production. Students in all programs are required to provide their own Windows XP Pro laptops and digital SLR cameras.
Century College in White Bear Lake provides photography courses through its visual communications technologies program. The school offers a visual communications technician diploma program and a visual communications technologies associate's program, both with a photography track. The degree program consists of 64 credits, and the diploma program requires 48 credits. The photography track in both programs is identical, covering areas like traditional and digital photography, forensic photography, photo editing software and portfolio development.
Dakota County Technical College
Dakota County Technical College offers five photography programs at its Rosemount campus. Students who want to earn a degree have the choice of a 64-credit Associate of Applied Science in Photographic Imaging Technology or a 60-credit Associate of Science in Photography. The school also offers a 32-credit Photographic Imaging Technology Diploma and two certificate programs. One certificate program can prepare a student for employment as a digital imaging technician, and the other can prepare an enrollee to become a photographer's assistant. Students earn 24 credits to receive the Digital Imaging Certificate and 19 credits to obtain the Photographer Assistant Certificate.
Hennepin Technical College
Hennepin Technical College in Brooklyn Park provides two diploma and two associate's programs that can prepare students to become professional photographers. Students in the commercial photography associate's program must earn 62 credits, while the portrait and wedding photography degree program requires 64 credits. The college also provides a 56-credit diploma program in commercial photography and a 58-credit diploma program in portrait and wedding photography. Students in all programs have the opportunity to develop a personal photographic style, which they can demonstrate through a portfolio.
Inver Hills Community College
Inver Hills Community College in Inver Grove Heights offers digital photography courses in its Associate in Fine Arts program. Students earn 60 credits to receive this degree, and the requirements include 30 credits in art courses and 30 credits in liberal arts classes. Students who want to learn photography can take beginning and advanced digital photography to satisfy a portion of the arts requirement.
Minneapolis Community and Technical College
Minneapolis Community and Technical College offers four photography programs at its main campus in Minneapolis. Students can pursue a certificate in dynamic media (pending approval) or a photography and digital imaging certificate; both programs require 27 credits. The school also provides a 54-credit photography and digital imaging diploma program and a 60-credit associate's program. All programs provide instruction on digital photography, photographic software and lighting. The certificate and degree programs also include instruction on portfolio development and presentation, portrait and product photography and the history of photography. They also require an internship.
Minnesota State University Moorhead
Minnesota State University provides two 120-credit bachelor's programs in studio art with photography emphases at its campus in Moorhead. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Both include courses in basic drawing, foundation design and art history, but the BFA program requires additional photography studio courses. The university also offers a photojournalism emphasis through its mass communications bachelor's program. Students enrolled in this 120-credit program complete courses in photo editing, news photography, photojournalism and documentary photography.
Wilmar's Ridgewater College offers a 64-credit professional photography technology diploma and a 72-credit associate's degree program. Both provide courses in wedding photography, Photoshop, commercial photography, digital applications and studio operations. Students also receive instruction in digital camera operation, portrait photography and preparing for employment. In addition, a supervised work experience is required. Graduates can pursue careers in commercial and portrait photography.
University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, which is situated in Minneapolis, offers photography courses in its undergraduate art programs. The photography portion of the curriculum covers topics like silver processes, digital photography, digital imaging and advanced photography.
The school also has a 60-credit MFA program with a concentration in photography. Students who choose the photography concentration can learn about photography theory and practice, documentary and live performance photography and advanced photographic techniques. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio, and admission is competitive.
