Physical Therapy Assistant Programs in Oklahoma

Approximately 5 schools in Oklahoma offer physical therapy assistant (PTA) programs. These programs are typically offered at the associate's level. Physical therapist assistants in Oklahoma must be licensed to obtain employment. This requires them to graduate from an accredited program and pass a licensure exam approved by the state board. To keep the license valid, 30 continuing education credits are required every 2 years.

Caddo Kiowa Technology Center (CKTC)

Only 14 students are admitted into CKTC's PTA program in Fort Cobb. Prior to applying to the program, students must complete the general education and technical professional support classes at either Southwestern Oklahoma State University's Sayre or Weatherford campus or another approved institution. The technical occupational specialty portion that is completed at CKTC takes about 2 semesters. Classes may include fundamental human necessities, pain control and restorative exercises. A practicum is completed in each semester for hands-on training. Graduates are prepared to sit for the national licensure exam.

Carl Albert State College

The PTA associate's program at Carl Albert State College in Poteau is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. The classes for this program are taught by 2 full-time faculty members and 3 adjunct faculty members. Admission is competitive and based on ACT scores, GPAs, prerequisite courses and observation hours. This 2-year program includes classes like anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, therapeutic procedures and rehabilitative exercises. Students complete 3 clinical experiences during the last year of the program.

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College

Because the PTA associate's program at this Miami college is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education, graduates may qualify to sit for the licensure exam. Approximately 95% of the program's 2009-2011 graduates passed the licensure exam, and 100% of all program graduates who passed the licensure exam and actively pursued employment were hired within 6 months of obtaining licensure.

Before being admitted into the program, students must complete general education courses and classes in anatomy and physiology and medical vocabulary. Once admitted, students must take classes like physical therapeutic methods, kinesiology and neurology. Students also complete several weeks of clinical rotations.

Southwestern Oklahoma State University

This university has campuses in Sayre and Weatherford, but only the Sayre campus offers the complete Associate in Applied Science Physical Therapist Assistant program. Students can complete the general education and professional support classes at the Weatherford campus, but the remainder of the program must be completed at the Sayre campus.

The professional support classes include first aid and medical vocabulary. The professional specialty classes include physical therapy basics, pain control, rehabilitative exercises and physical therapy issues. Two practicums are also included in the curriculum. Graduates may qualify for the licensure exam.

Tulsa Community College

Up to 35 students can be accepted each year into Tulsa Community College's PTA program in Tulsa. There are about 4 faculty members in the 2-year program, and graduates can sit for the national licensure exam. The curriculum requires 68 credits, 46 of which are earned through physical therapy assistant classes. These classes include pathophysiology, pharmacology, human development and rehabilitative exercises. Students also receive supervised training in clinical settings.
