Online Physical Therapy Master's Program Overviews
Though there are no physical therapy online master's degree programs offered, the following paragraph describes physical therapy online degrees at Boston University and Nova Southeastern University. According to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), by 2020, physical therapy will be provided by those who are doctors of physical therapy. Master's and doctorate degrees are the only programs accredited in accordance with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics further states that in the near future, doctorate degrees might be a required entry-level degree for physical therapists.
Nova Southeastern University: Ph.D. Program
Nova Southeastern University (NSU), founded in 1964, is the sixth largest independent university in the U.S., and enrolls more than 28,000 students, with over 100,000 alumni. NSU has a 300-acre campus and campuses and/or programs in nine countries. NSU offers over 40 undergraduate programs, one graduate degree program and five certificate programs delivered in day, night and online courses. As of 2002, master's degrees are the required entry-level degree to become a physical therapist (PT); the entry-level program at Nova Southeastern University is a doctorate program (DPT).
The Ph.D. online degree program in physical therapy can be completed on a part-time or full-time basis. Students entering the Ph.D. program at Nova must carry appropriate personal medical and hospital insurance; Nova Southeastern University offers an insurance plan for students. Applicants must either have an master's degree in Physical Therapy or a master's degree in any discipline with a bachelor degree in Physical Therapy. Students without a master's degree will be required to complete an additional 15 credits before entering the Ph.D. in Physical Therapy online degree program. Students must also complete a supervised, original research dissertation on a physical therapy topic under supervision of the dissertation committee.
Boston University: Transitional Doctoral Program
Boston University, founded in 1839, is the fourth largest independent university in the nation. Boston University was rated 1st for graduate schools with occupational therapist program by the U.S. News & World Report rankings and the physical therapy program ranked 24th. Boston University offers 17 colleges and schools with more than 250 degree programs. As more and more academic programs are converting to an entry-level doctorate of physical therapy degree, Boston University offers a transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy to meet these needs.
The transitional doctorate degree in physical therapy is meant to bridge gaps between the bachelor's/master's degree and the current DPT program, giving entry-level physical therapists current knowledge and skills in advanced content. The DPT can be earned either on campus or through an online format. Applicants must be qualified, licensed physical therapists who graduated from an accredited program and have at least six months of full-time employment in the U.S. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program is 22 credits in length, and all requirements must be completed within three years of acceptance.
