Police Dispatcher Schools and Colleges with Program Information
Police dispatchers often work in police stations as communications professionals, receiving and relaying information on police and criminal activity within a district. Programs to qualify for this work can be completed in two years or less.
How to Select a Police Dispatcher School
A potential police dispatcher can choose a criminal justice technology program through a public safety or related degree program, like safety studies. Some technical schools offer 6-month police dispatcher certificate programs. Students can get an idea of a program's quality by considering the instructors, who are often listed on a prospective school's website. Local law enforcement professionals and community leaders dealing with criminology are involved in day-to-day work in public service, and many also teach police dispatcher or public safety courses. They receive and may pass on up-to-date information on advances in police technology and law.
Schools also may include an internship in a criminal justice or police dispatch program. Police dispatchers get on-the-job training to develop communication skills and ability to responsibly react to extenuating circumstances. A police dispatcher often deals with the same unforeseeable issues with which police deal, only from a different place of work. Internships can be taken at local law enforcement agencies where a student may shadow the police dispatcher, as well as other professionals, like police officers. A police dispatcher must understand the circumstances he or she is dealing with from all sides, so he or she can relay information.
